How To Train Your Dragon is one of my favorite animated movies. So I decided to try and write a pattern for my favorite character: Toothless. Cool and cute at the same time, Toothless is my dream pet. I hope you enjoy making a dragon of your own! Thanks!] Height: 5 % inches ill Level: Advanced (because of complicated shaping to cut down on sewing) You will need: Yarn: Black, one skein; small amounts Red/Dark Brown, Green, Light Browr and White; worsted weight Crochet Hook size H/8, and size F/5 for the eyes White felt Tapestry needle; sewing needle Polyester fiberfill

ch = chain tog = together sc = single crochet hdc= half double crochet st = stitch dc = double crochet sl = slip RS = Right Side rnd = round Notes: Toothless is crocheted in continuous rounds, so use a stitch marker. Also, the black yarn can be hard to see. Make sure you have plenty of light.
THE HEAD
With black yarn, make a slipknot and chain 3, sl st into 3rd chain from hook. Rnd 1: 6 sc into center. (6 sc) Rnd 2: \*Sc 1, sc 2 in next st\* 3 times. (9 sc) Rnd 3: Sc 3, \*sc 2 in next st, sc 1, sc 2 in next st\* 2 times. (13 sc) Rnd 4: Sc 4, \*sc 2, 2 sc in next st\* 3 times. (16 sc) Rnd 5: Sc 8, 2 sc in next st, sc1, 2 sc in next st, sc 5. (18 sc) Rnd 6: Sc around. (18 sc) Rnd 7: Sc 8, \*2 sc in next st, sc 3, sc 2 in next st\*, repeat from \*. (22 sc) Rnd 8: Sc 9, \*ch 3, skip 2 sts, sc in 3rd\*, sc 5, repeat \*to\*, sc 2. (18 sc, 6 ch) Rnd 9: Sc 3, sc2tog, sc 4, \*sc2tog, sc 3\*, rep 2 times.(20 sc) Rnd 10: Sc 2, sc2tog, sc 4, hdc 1, dc 1, dc2tog, dc 2, dc2tog, dc 1, hdc 1, sc 3. Now stop and stuff the head. Don't stuff it too firmly, as you want the head to be a little flat.
Rnd 12: \*Sc 1, sc2tog\*, repeat twice, sc2tog twice. (8 sc) Rnd 13: Sc2tog 3 times, cut yarn. Sew opening closed.
THE EAR FIN THINGS (Make 2)
Do you see the two holes on top of Toothless? head? This is where you will crochet his ear fin... things. Rnd 1: Join the black yarn and sc in first sc, sc in next st, sc in next 3 ch. (5 sc) Rnd 2: Sc around. Rnd 3: Sc 2, sc2tog, sc1, cut yarn. Sew ends in. Repeat for second ear fin thing.
THE EYES (Make 2)
S) With black and smaller hook, ch 2, 4 sc in second ch from hook, ch 1, turn Row 2: Sc in first 2 sc, sl st in next st, fasten off. ith green, sc in first sc of first row with RS facing. Sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in last : will now be working in the opposite side of the eye, RS will still be facing 2 sc in side of sc, 2 sc in first ch (where you worked the first 4 sc), 2 sc in side of sc, sl st to first sc. Sew a small white glint in his eye. Then sew the eyes onto the head. (My Toothless eyes ended up a little padded as I tucked the yarn ends underneath them.) You are now done with Toothless' head!
THE BODY
With black, ch 18, sl st to first ch being careful not to twist. Rnd 1-3: Sc in each st around. (18 sc) 4: Sc in next 5 sts, ch 3, skip 3 st, sc in next 2 st, ch 3, skip 3 st, sc in next 5 s1 Rnd 5: Sc in next 5 sts, sc in each ch, 2 sc in each of next 2 stitches, sc in each ch and sc to end of row. (20 sc) Rnd 6-7: Sc in each st around. (20 sc) Rnd 8: \*Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st\* around. (25 sc) Rnd 9-13: Sc in each st around. (25 sc) Rnd 14: \*Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog in next st\* around. (20 sc) Rnd 15: \*Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog in next st\* around. (15 sc) Fasten off, leaving a long tail to crochet the base to the body (about 35 in).
THE BODY BASE
With black, make a slipknot and ch 2 Rnd 1: 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (5 sc) Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (10 sc) Rnd 3: \*Sc 1, sc 2 in next st\* around, sl st in next st. Fasten off. (15 sc) With yarn from body, sc base and body together. Stuff the body, and sew body to head.
THE FRONT FEET

(6 sts) Row 2-3: Sc in each st around. (6 sts) Row 4: Sc 1, sc 2 in next st, sc in next 4 sts. (7 sts) Row 5: Sc 4, sc 2 in next st, sc in next 2 sts. (8 sts) Row 6-9: Sc in each st around. (8 sts) Row 10: \*Sc 2 in next st\* 5 times, sc in the remaining sts. (13 sts) Row 11: Sc in each st around. (13 sts) Row 12: \*Sc2tog, sc 1\* repeat between \*\* 3 times, sc 4 sts. (10 sts) Stuff foot, not stuffing the leg. Row 13: Sc2tog around. (5 sts) Fasten off, sew hole closed and weave ends in. Repeat in other hole. How is he looking?
THE BACK LEGS (Make 2)
With black, make a slipknot and ch 2. Rnd 1: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join. (8 sts) Rnd 2: \*Sc 1, sc 2 in next st\* repeat between \*\* 4 times. (12 sts) Rnd 3-4: Sc in each st around. (12 sts) Rnd 5: \*Sc2tog, sc 1\*, repeat between \*\* 2 times, sc in each remaining st. (10 sts) Rnd 6: Sc in 5 sts, sc2tog, sc 1, sc2tog. (8 sts) Rnd 7: Sc in each st around. (8 sts) Rnd 8: Sc 2, sc2tog, sc 2, \*sc 2 in next st\* 2 times. (9 sts) Rnd 9: Sc 2 in next st, sc in each st around. (10 sts) Rnd 10: Sc in each st around. (10 sts) Rnd 11: Sc2tog 2 times, stuff foot, (but not to top of leg), sc2tog to end of round. Fasten off, sew hole closed and weave ends in. Sew leg to the body, referring to the picture for placement.
THE TAIL The tail consists of 4 parts: the main tail, the tail fins, and the strap.
The Main Tail Part
With black, make a slipknot and ch 2. Rnd 1: 3 sc an 2nd ch from hook. Rnd 2: Sc in each st around. (3 sts) Rnd 3: Sc 2 in 1"t st, sc in remaining sts. (4 sts) Rnd 4: \*Sc 1, sc 2 in next st\*, repeat between \*\* 3 times. (6 sts) Rnd 5-14: Sc in each st around. (6 sts) Rnd 15: Sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts. (6 sts) Rnd 16: Repeat Rnd 15. (6 sts) Rnd 17-21: Sc in each st around. (6 sts) Rnd 22: Sc 2 in each st around. (12 sts) Sl st in next st, fasten off. Sew to body. (I didn't stuff my tail, but you may if you wish)
The Right Tail Fin
With black, ch 7 Row 1: Sc in 2"d ch from hook and in each ch across. (6 sts) Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (6 sts) Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc 4, sc2tog. (5 sts) Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, sc 3. (4 sts) Row 5: Ch 1, turn. Sc 2, sc2tog. (3 sts) Row 6: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, sc 3 in next st. Sc evenly along side, sc 3 in corner. Sc evenly across foundation chain. Fasten off. Sew the fin to the tail, referring to the pictures below for placement.
The Left Tail Fin
With red/dark brown yarn, (depending on whether the artificial fin was made by Hiccup or Gobber), repeat Rows 1-5. Row 6: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, sc 1. Fasten off. Turn over; attach yarn at slipknot, and sc across foundation chain. Sc 3 in corner and sc evenly along side. Sc 2 in base of sc at beginning of Row 6, sl st, and fasten off. Sew the fin to the tail, referring to the pictures below for placement.
The Strap
With light brown, ch 16.
Lay the chain across the left fin seam, and then under the tail.
Insert your hook into the 8th chain.
ake a slip-stitch and fasten off. Sew chain on securely, and weave in the ends. If you made the brown fin, skip the next step. If you made the red fin, you will need to cut a skull motif out of white felt.
Then sew/ hot glue it to the red fin.
Only one part left.. the wings!
THE WINGS
Follow instructions from Row 1 through 21 for both wings. With black yarn, ch 12. Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 ch, sl st in next ch, sc in next 4 ch, sl st in next ch. Ch 1, turn. (11 sts) Row 2-13: Sl st in next st, sc in next 4 sc, sl st in next st, sc in next 4 sc, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn. (11 sts) Row 14: S1 st in next st, \*sc 1, sc2tog, sc 1, sl st in next st\*, repeat in between\*\*. Ch 1, turn. (9 sts) Row 15: Sl st in next st, sc2tog, sc 1, sl st in next st, sc 1, sc2tog, sl st. Ch 1, turn. (7 sts) Row 16-17: Sl st in next st, sc 2, sl st in next st, sc 2, sl st. Ch 1, turn. (7 sts) Row 18: Sl st in next st, sc2tog, sl st in next st, sc2tog, sl st. Ch 1, turn. (5 sts Row 19: Sl st in next st, sc 1, sl st in next st, sc 1, sl st. Ch 1, turn. (5 sts) Row 20: Sc2tog, sl st, sc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (3 sts) Row 21: Sc3tog. (1 st)
For Left Wing:
Sc evenly across left side until you reach the corner. Fasten off, weave in end
For Right Wing:
After Row 21, fasten off. Attach yarn at the bottom right corner and single crochet evenly across. Sl st in top st, fasten off. Weave in ends.
