Twist and Shout
A basic beanie with a twist. Perfect for boys and girls of all ages. This hat was designed for spark team "feeling snappy" and should not be shared, copied, or sold.
Materials
Yarn: Bulky weight, slighty thicker then worsted weight. Yarn used in sample: Sirdar Denim Chunky. I LOvE this yarn for hats. Crochet Hooks: I Gauge: 4" = 12 sts, 9 rounds Sizes: newborn - adult Notes: All sizes start the same. Continue working increase rounds until desired size is noted, then skip to "body". Do not join at the end of each round. This hat is worked in a continuous round. Use a marker (such as a scrap piece of yarn) to keep track of the beginning of the round. Directions: With I hook, Ch 6 (or magic loop of 6sts), join and pull closed. 1. 2sc in each stitch around (12sts). 2. \*hdc, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (18sts) 3. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (24sts) 4. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (30sts) newborn 5. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc 2, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (36sts) 6-12mths 6. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc 3, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (42sts) 12-24mths 7. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc 4, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (48sts) Toddler 8. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc 5, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (54sts) Child 9. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc 6, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (60sts) Teen/Adult 10. \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc 7, 2hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (66sts) Lg Adult At this point, the ridges formed by crossing the two stitches in the beginning of each repeat above, will start to form sections and make it easy to see the stitch pattern. Body (for all sizes): \*sk 1, hdc, hdc in skipped st, hdc — (work same amount of stitches as the bold number from last round completed), hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. Continue to work the previous round until hat measures length according to size chart at end of pattern. When desired length has been reached, sc in next st, sl st. Working in BLO (back loops only), sc in each stitch around for 2-5 rounds. Finish off and weave in ends.
Snappy Tips
Abbreviations: chain (ch), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), slip stitch (sl st), increase - work in the same stitch (2sc), back loops only (BLO), skip (sk), stitch (st) When working in the round, I start with a magic loop of x amount of sts. Others prefer to start with a ch, join with a slip stitch to create a ring, and work x amount of stitches into the ring. I have created a few videos to help explain how I do some things. I prefer to make hats approximately 1" smaller than the head circumference so they will stretch and not be too big. Note: All measurements are approximate and based on "average" head sizes according to several online sources. Hat "height" is the measurement from top of crown to bottom edge.
