SIDE
With MC and smaller circular needle, CO 80 (96, 104) sts. Pm and join for working in rnds. Work in k1, p1 rib for 4 rnds. Change to larger circular needle. Work in St st until piece measures 3 (31/4, 31/2)" (7.5 [8.5, 9] cm) from CO.
CROWN
Next rnd: \*K10 (12, 13), pm; rep from \* to end of rnd. Dec rnd: \*Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog; rep from \* to end of rnd-8 sts dec'd. Next rnd: Knit. Rep last 2 rnds 8 (10, 11) more times-8 sts. Break yarn and thread tail through rem sts. Fasten securely on WS.
Long Curls (make 12)
With MC and larger circular needle, CO 60 sts. Next row: \*K1ferb; rep from \* to end of row-120 sts. BO pwise.
SHORT CuRLS (MAKE 15)
Work as for long curls, but CO 40 sts and inc to 80 sts.
BANGS
Wrap MC around 5" (12.5 cm) length of cardboard 70 times. With hand sewing needle and matching thread, sew strands tog with a backstitch, as shown in illustration. Cut loops apart opposite stitching. Pin to front of hat, having ends even with lower hat edge. Sew in place along top edge. Trim ends of bangs.
BOW TAILS (MAKE 2)
With CC and larger dpn, CO 21 sts. Pm in center st.

Next row (RS): P1, k2tog, knit to marked st, M1R, k1, M1L, knit to last 3 sts, ssk, p1. Next row: K1, purl to last st, k1. Rep last 2 rows 2 more times. Dec row (RS): P1, [k2tog] 2 times, knit to marked st, M1R, k1, M1l, knit to last 5 sts, [ssk] 2 times, p1-2 sts dec'd. Next row: K1, purl to last st, k1. Rep last 8 rows once more-17 sts. Work even in St st, working first and last st of each row in rev St st, until piece measures 4" (10 cm) from longest point. Break yarn and leave sts on dpn. Make 2nd ribbon to match, but do not break yarn. With RS tog, join pieces using 3-needle BO.
LooPS
With CC and larger dpn, CO 60 sts. Pm and join for working in rnds. Purl 1 rnd. Knit every rnd until piece measures 3" (7.5 cm) from CO. BO pwise.
KNOT
With CC and larger dpn, CO 18 sts. Pm and join for working in rnds. Purl 1 rnd. Knit every rnd until piece measures 1" (2.5 cm) from CO. BO pwise.

FINISHING
Weave in ends. Block hat and bow pieces.
CURLS
Twist each curl in direction it is already curling to form even spirals. Pin 6 long curls on each side of center top of hat, as shown. Tack each curl in place individually at top. Pin remaining short curls in place between long ones, approximately along first dec row of hat. Sew as for long curls. Tack each long curl at a second point about halfway down its Iength.
Bow
Layer loops over tails and pull both through knot, adjusting so that pleats form at knot. Tack layers tog invisibly by Jip: It may be easier to tack the bow in place by working from inside the hat. hand. Try on hat for bow placement and pin, being careful to cover "bald" area between bangs and curls at hat top. Tack securely at ribbon ends and center knot.
