Black Watch Tartan Cowl Knitting Pattern: A Warm and Stylish Accessory for Winter

Black Watch Tartan Cowl

I designed this pattern to give the scarf to my Dad for Christmas to be something extra warm and wind-proof, but not so bulky that it wouldn't fit under a winter coat.

Pattern Notes:

This scarf is knit in three colours, carrying the two colours not in use along the back, so the fabric produced is very thick and, because the needles are 0.5mm under the recommended size, it is also very dense. If you mean to adapt the chart for other uses, keep in mind the fact that this kind of three-stranded colour work produces a fabric that holds its shape and so does not drape the same way knitting usually does. Just a warning; the floats are quite long. I don't mean this to discourage any beginners to stranded colour work, I only want you to be aware that you will need to twist the yarn about every four stitches so the floats don't form huge loops on the inside of the scarf. The ribbing at the top has many fewer stitches than the body of the cowl so that it will stay close to the face and also so as not to fold down and reveal the floats of the colour work on the wrong side. If you would like it to be looser feel free to cast on however many stitches you like; just be sure to increase to the right number once you start the colour chart.

Final Measurements:

It measures 22" (56 cm) around by 10 34" (27 cm) tall, including ribbing. If this is to0 closely fiting for your liking I would advise going up in needle size and/or weight of yarn rather than adding extra chart repeats as the chart is very wide (48 sts across).

Materials:

38g (79 yards) each blue and green worsted weight (I used Red Heart Soft Touch) 66g (132 yards) black worsted weight (I used Bernat Satin) 4.0mm circular needles (I used a 16", but you could use DPNs or the magic loop method if you prefer) Gauge: 4" across is 26 sts, 4" high is 27 rows. To begin: CO 96 sts and join in the round, putting a place-marker at the join Row 1: In black \*K1, P1, repeat from \* Rows 2-8: repeat row 1 Row 9: \*K1, M1, repeat from \* at this time you should have 144 sts Row 10: begin following colour chart

Main body:

Work through all 58 rows of the chart once. If you would prefer a longer scarf simply continue in the colour chart from the beginning until you reach the desired length.

To finish:

Row 1: K one row in black Rows 2-9: In black \*K1, P1, repeat from \* BO all sts using Elizabeth Zimmerman's sewn bind off, or any other elastic bind off you prefer (make sure the edge will be able to stretch so that you can fit it over your head) I hope you enjoy this pattern and that it helps keep someone special warm. This pattern is intended for your own personal use. If you want to use it in any other way, or if you have any questions regarding the pattern, please message me.
