Yarn Fingering weight yarn at 16 wpi, approx 200 yds/183 m. The Pinelands Spring cowl shown above was knit from handspun Merino, single ply.
Notions
Smooth waste yarn Yarn needle 2 knitting needles, US #5/3.75mm needles or appropriate to yarn used.

PATTERN NOTES:
The pattern is a rib pattern with a 4-row repeat. The pattern is created by the offset needle set-up and moving the working needles on the front bed everytworows. Lock settings do not change. Lock settings:EX EX
NEEDLE SET-UP:

PATTERN DIRECTIONS:
Cast-on with a smooth waste yarn (as for a provisional cast-on) across 18 needles on the front bed and back beds, observing standard cast-on and set-up rules. Knit several rows for stability. Change to working yarn. With working yarn: Black strippers. Lock settings: EX EX \*Racking handle down Knit 2 rows EX EX Turn racking handle one full rotation to the right Knit 2 rows EX EX Turn racking handle one full rotation to the left.\* Knit in pattern to 48 inches or desired length. Leave 18-14 inches tail for grafting. Knit 2-3 rows in waste yarn and knit off.
FINISHING
Pick up the provisional cast-on with a US #5/3.75mm needle and discard the waste yarn. Align needles and, using the yarn tail from the last completed row, graft the two ends of the cowl together. Weave in the ends. Wet block or lightly steam to size.
