Hooded Shawl
I love hoods and I love shawls and I love Stephen West. This hooded shawl started out as my project for his awesome Craftsy class Shawlscapes. which can be placed in the centre (if you like to wear your shawl with the pointy side in back) or off-centre (if you wear your shawl as a scarf with the pointy side in front, like me). This hooded shawl is sure to keep you stylishly warm.

[HOOD]
You can knit the hood in either A or B, whichever you prefer. I chose B (gray), as my A is a gradient. The hood is constructed like a giant sock heel, using short rows. I suggest German short rows, but you can use any method you feel comfortable with. With colour B, pick up and knit 41 stitches along top edge of shawl, either left/right of centre, or in the centre, depending on your preferred hood placement/wearing option (see illustration). Left-sided hood placement: start at the fourteenth selvedge stitch to the left of the centre (first slipped edge stitch in colour B to the left of the centre). Centre hood placement: start at twentyfirst selvedge stitch to the right of the centre. R1 (wS): kfb 41 times (82 sts) R2: k to last stitch, sll wyif R3-5: Repeat last row three times more R6: k36, PM, M1l, k10, M1R, PM, k35, sll wyif (84 sts) R7: k to last stitch, sll wyif R8-9: Repeat last row twice more R10: k to M, sl M, M1l, k to M, M1R, sl M, k to last stitch, sll wyif (86 sts) R11-13: k to last stitch, sll wyif Repeat last 4 rows three more times. There should be 20 stitches between markers and 92 stitches total.

illustration for hood placement R26: k to last stitch, sll wyif R27-47: Repeat last row 21 times more. The next row is the first short row. I suggest using German Short Rows, because they're fast and easy and don't leave any holes. Where the instructions say "turn", turn your work, then create a double stitch (Ds) at the beginning of the next round (by slipping the stitch purlwise wyif, then pulling the working yarn firmly upward and behind the needle). when you come to these double stitches again later, knit them as a single stitch. There's many tutorials on short rows out there if you need any help with this technique. Alternatively, you can treat the "turn" as a w&t (wrap and turn), and pick up the wraps later and knit them together with the wrapped stitch. R48: k to last stitch, turn R49: DS, k to last stitch, turn R50: Ds, K to before last turn, turn Rep. 67 times more (until only one stitch and the centre 20 sts between markers remain as single stitches) After the last turn: Ds, k to last stitch, sll wyif (knit double stitches as one stitch) R119 (ws): k to last sts, sll wyif (knit double stitches as one stitch) R120-121: repeat last row twice more R122 (RS): k to second M, sl M, k1, turn R123: DS, k to second M, sl M, k1, turn R124: Ds, k to before last turn, k2, turn (knit double stitches as one stitch) Repeat until all but the selvedge stitches have been worked (67 times more). R192 (RS): DS, k to last sts, sll wyif (knit DS as one stitch) R193: k all sts (remember to knit DS as one stitch) Break yarn. Bind ott the hood in contrast colour with the i-cord bind ott as tollows: With colour A and the right side of the hood facing you, pick up and knit 26 sts along the selvedge edge of the hood (one stitch per selvedge stitch), knit 92 live stitches of hood, then pick up and knit another 26 sts along selvedge edge of the hood. (144 sts in total) Cast on 3 stitches using the cable cast on method. Next row: \* k2, ssk, slide stitches back on right hand needle. Repeat from \* until all stitches are bound off and only the 3 i-cord stitches remain. BO 3 sts with preferred method. Weave in all ends and block to desired dimensions.
