BUTTERCUP Design by Amy E. Anderson @

Women's Short Cape with Scalloped Edging Advanced Beginner Skill Level 4 Sizes to Fit Women Small, Medium, Large, X-Large Worsted Weight Wool Yarn design by Amy E. Anderson Last Thanksgiving, I spent 4 delicious days at home, alone, because Ihad a cold. I made a trip to the library and picked out 10 videos, including a couple of Jane Austens. One of them featured a young girl wearing a short, garter stitch cape. In those scenes of damp and cold, it looked like the coziest garment in the world. 1 chose to do mine in simple stockinette, adding a scallopedborder for fun. Life has many disappointments, but I am happy to say that this littile cape really is the coziest. It's also practical because it stays put and doesn't get in your way. You could wear it while reading, knitting, cooking, gardening, riding a bike, or working at the computer. The edging is easy, but you will need to pay attention. The rest of the knitting is very easy and would be suitable for an advanced beginner. Directions are given for size Small, with Medium, Large, and X-Large in parentheses. If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To find the right size, stand with your hands clasped together and elbows protruding at your sides. Have someone measure around your entire body at elbow level. Choose a size that is at least 4" larger than this measurement. Materials: Cascade 220, worsted weight wool. 3 (3, 4, 4) skeins Approx. 550 (640, 740, 840) yds. Needles: Size 7, 16" and $\pmb{24^{\circ}}$ circular, or size needed to obtain gauge Gauge: 9 sts $\mathbf{\delta}=\mathbf{\delta}^{2}\mathbf{\dots}$ in stockinette stitch Finished Dimensions: Circumference at lower edge: 53" (57%", 62”, 661%") Body Length: $15^{;;}(16^{;;},\,17^{;;},\,18^{;;})$

Knit around until piece measures 7/2" (7/2", 7", 7/2") high, measuring from the bottom points of the edging. Place 3 additional markers on Next Rd as follows: Note: Use a different color marker than your end-ofround marker. Knit 48 (52, 56, 60), PM, Knit 72 (78, 84, 90), PM, Knit 48 (52, 56, 60), PM, Knit 72 (78, 84, 90). Now, begin working decreases as follows: Rd 1 (Dec. Rd): K1 \*K2tog, knit to 3 sts before marker, SSK, ${\sf K}{\sf{2}}^{\star}$ , repeat \* - \*, ending SSK, K1. Rd 2: Knit Rd 3: Knit Rd 4: Knit Repeat these 4 Rounds 5 (6, 8, 9) more times. You will have a total of 192 (204, 208, 220) sts remaining. Continue working decreases as follows: Rd 1 (Dec. Rd): K1 \*K2tog, knit to 3 sts before marker, SSK, ${\sf K}{\sf{2}}^{\star}$ , repeat \* - \*, ending SSK, K1. Rd 2: Knit Repeat these 2 Rounds 10 (11, 12, 13) more times. Note: Switch to $16"$ circular needle, when necessary. You wil have a total of 104 (108, 104, 108) sts remaining.
Buttercup (Page Two)
Collar:
Knit 5 rounds. For a simple rolled edge, bind off all sts on next rd. For an I-cord edge, work next rd as follows: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}2$ , K2tog tbl, replace 3 sts from right needle onto left needle\*, repeat \* - \* to end. Draw the remaining 3 sts together and tie off.
Finishing:
Weave in loose ends. Block garment by pressing lightly with a steam iron on the wrong side.
Helpful Hint:
If you get done and your cape is too large, unravel the collar and work 1-2 more Decrease Rounds, then re-knit the collar. This will shift the cape downward, making in longer & smaller. Likewise, if your cape is too small, unravel the collar plus 1-2 Decrease Rounds, then re-knit the collar on a larger # of stitches. This will shift the cape upward, making it shorter, but larger. Keep this in mind for growing kids. As your child grows, you can increase the size of the cape to get more wear out of it, or decrease the size and hand it down to a younger child.
