by Cori Dodds Materials: Crochet hook size H (or size you use for worsted weight yarn); worsted weight yarn (about 100 grams for adult size); tapestry needle to weave in ends
NOTES:
IMPORTANT:Thech3at beginning of each round DOES NOT count as a double crochet YouTube tutorial for magic adjustable loop: http://youtu.be/-TsnXDsq15Q
Directions:
Round 1: Begin with a magic adjustable loop. Chain 3, then make 12 double crochets in the loop (do NOT count the original chain 3 as a dc). Join with a slip stitch in top of the first dc (NOT the ch 3 but the actual first dc).

Round 2: ch 3, 2 dc in each stitch around (including the joining stitch). Join with a slip stitch in top of the first dc.24dc Round 3: ch 3, 1 dc in joining stitch, \* 2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch, repeat from \* around. Join with a slip stitch in top of the first dc. 36 dc Round 4: ch 3, 2 dc in joining stitch, \* 1 dc in each of next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from \* around. Join with a slip stitch in top of the first dc. 48 dc Round 5: ch 3, 1 dc in joining stitch and in each of next 2 stitches, \* 2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in each of next 3 stitches, repeat from \* around. Join with a slip stitch in top of the first dc. 60 dc NOTE: for older children, and teens and adults with a smaller head, this may be the last round you need to increase. For children, you may be able to stop increasing after round 4. Round 6: ch 3, 2 dc in joining stitch, \* 1 dc in each of next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from \* around. Join with a slip stitch in top of the first dc. 72 dc. NOTE: This willikely be the last round you need to increase, but if your crochet is tighter or you are using a smaller weight yarn, you may need more increase rounds. Round 7 (repeat until beanie is desired length-my adult size ones are usually 12-13 rows in length, without rolling a brim): ch 3, 1 dc in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in top of the first dc. 72 dc (you will have 72 dc in each round from now on) When beanie has reached desired length, you can join the last round and finish off, weaving in ends. Or, if you'd like a slightly different finish, you can join, ch 1, 1 single crochet in each stitch around, join with slip stitch and finish off, weaving in ends. Beanie can be made longer to roll up a brim if desired. And of course, you can add your own little flourishes, such as buttons or crocheted flowers if you wish. Sizing note: This is written in specific pattern language, but is really more of a formula than a pattern. The size of the hat can be determined by the weight of the yarn and the size of the hook. If you need a smaller hat, use a lighter weight yarn and a smaller hook, or just make fewer increase rounds. Similarly, for a larger hat, use a larger hook and/or heavier yarn, or make more increase rounds, following the increase pattern of adding an additional 12 stitches per round.
