Twisted Personaliry Cowl

This pattern is for a cowl, knitted in two contrasting colours with twists and cables.

Yarn

Any aran weight yarn. Pictures shown show Rowan Alpaca Cotton in colourways Oo400 and 00405

Needles

5.00mm (circular or straights, whatever you prefer really) Tapestry needle for grafting Gauge/Tension 16sts and 23 rows in 4"

Techniques Required

Provisional Cast On Knitting Purling Cabling Colourwork

Abbreviations Used

CO cast on kKnit Ppurl 4/4 RC slip 4 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back: k4; k4 from cable needle MC maincolour CC contrasting colour

Instructions

Using a provisional cast on, CO 18st MC and 18st CC Knit/purl MC on MC & CC on CC throughout the pattern (ie. if the stitch on the needle is MC, use the MC for the stitch into it). When changing from one colour to the next through the stocking stitch sections. twist the yarn together before making the first stitch of the new colour. Do not twist yarn for cabled sections.

Cable Section

Cable Row 1: k18 Cable Row 2: k4, p10, k4 Cable Rows 3-12: repeat rows 1-2 Cable Row 13: k5, 4/4 RC, k5 Cable Row 14: k4, p10, k4 Cable Row 15: k18 Cable Row 16: k4, p10, k4 Cable Rows 17-20:repeat rows 15-16 Cable Row 21: k5, 4/4 RC, k5 Cable Row 22: k4, p10, k4 Repeat rows 1-22 four more times.

Twist Section

Repeat rows 1-12 from cable section once more. For next 60 rows. do not twist yarn when changing colour (you will end up with two separate sections - one in MC, one in CC) Twist Row 13: k18 Twist Row 14: K4, p10, k4 Twist Rows 15-72: repeat twist rows 13-14 Twist the two sections - pass the left hand section over the right hand one and then pass the now left hand one, over the now right hand one. Be careful that your previously knitted work doesn't twist as well. Begin twisting yarn together at colour change again. Twist Row 43: k18 Twist Row 44: k4, p10, k4

Grafting the ends

Put the stitches from the provisional cast onto your spare needle and align the stitches so the wrong sides of the cowl are together with the point of your knitting needles going the same way as each other. Using Kitchener stitch, graft the ends of the cowl together.

Knit into the first stitch on the front needle and remove the stitch off the end of the needle. Purl into the first stitch on the front needle. Purl into the first stitch on the back needle and remove the stitch off the end of the needle.\*\* Repeat from \* to \*\* until one stitch remains. Thread end through last remaining stitch to secure.
