TWISTED BEGINNINGS
what it is
A chunky cow made with a variety of increases, decrease and cables. This can be easily knitted in a week or so in front of the TV and can be used all year round when it becomes a bit chilly. The cowl is made using circular needles and requires the use of the magic loop technique (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB1sSOrofG0) and the cable cast on method (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YUfdREnSQl).

what you need
260m (288yds) bulky yarn. Shown in Artesano Aran C756 Violet. 9mm (Us 13) 32" (80cm) circular needles. 9mm cable needle or spare dpn. 1 marker. Stitch holder.
what gauge to use
10 sts and 14 rows in st st equals 10cm (4").
what size it is
Long. Approximate circumference of 130cm (51"). Height of 20cm (8"). The circumference can be increased or decreased by multiples of 20 sts if desired. Each 20 st repeat equates to approximately 13cm (5").
what abbreviations mean
k: knit p:purl st(s): stitch(es) st st: stocking stitch (alternate between knit and purl rows) co: cast on rnd(s): round(s) dpn: double pointed needle(s) pm: place marker rm: removemarker sl: slip kfb: knit front and back (or bar increase) ssk: slip slip knit. - slip two stitches as if to knit, then slide the leff-hand needle into the front part of both stitches and knit them together (a left slanting decrease) slip the next 5 stitches onto the cable needle (or double pointed needle) and hold at the back of the work. knit the next 5 stitches, then knit the 5 stitches from the cable needle (or double pointed needle) c10f: slip the next 5 stitches onto the cable needle (or double pointed needle) and hold at the front of the work. knit the next 5 stitches, then knit the 5 stitches from the cable needle (or double pointed needle)
what you do
1. casting on Using magic loop and using the cable cast on method, co 200 sts (or multiple of 20 sts for larger / smaller circumference), distributing the stitches evenly across the needles. pm, and join in the round.
2. repeated pattern
rnd 1: (kfb, k3, ssk, k4)\*, repeat \* to end. rnd 2: (kl, kfb, k3, ssk, k3)\*, repeat \* to end. rnd 3: (k2, kfb, k3, ssk, k2)\*, repeat \* to end. rnd 4: (k3, kfb, k3, ssk, kl)\*, repeat \* to end. rnd 5: (k4, kfb, k3, ssk)\*, repeat \* to end.
3. right slanted twist
rnd 6: (k5, c10b, k5)\*, repeat \* to end. rnd 7: k. 4. repeated pattern rnds 8-12: Repeat section 2. above once. 5. left slanted twist
rnd 13:
rm, sl5 sts onto the stitch holder and hold at back of work, pm on the stitch holder, (k10, c1of)\*, repeat \* to last 5 sts. sl5 sts from stitch holder onto the cable needle (or dpn). k5 sts from the cable needle (or dpn) with the last 5 sts from the rnd at the front of the work. k last 5 sts of rnd. This should result in a left slanted cable at the front of the work with the marker at the centre of the twist. 6. repeated pattern rnds 15-19: Repeat section 2. above once.
7. right slanted twist
rnd 20: (k5, c10b, k5)\*, repeat \* to end. rnd 21: k.
8. repeated pattern
rnds 22-26:
Repeat section 2. above once. 9. left slanted twist
rnd 27:
rm, sl5 sts onto the stitch holder and hold at back of work, pm on the stitch holder, (k10, c10f)\*, repeat \* to last 5 sts. sl5 sts from stitch holder onto the cable needle (or dpn). k5 sts from the cable needle (or dpn) with the last 5 sts from the rnd at the front of the work. k last 5 sts of rnd. This should result in a leff slanted cable at the front of the work with the marker at the centre of the twist. k to marker. 10. repeated pattern rnds 29-33: Repeat section 2. above once.
11. binding off
Bind off loosely.
