Materials:
150-200 yds. worsted weight yarn (sample shown in Brown Sheep 'Lamb's Pride Worsted") Few yards contrast color for 2-color hat Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge Tapestry needle Gauge: 3.5 sc = 1" with size H/8 (5 mm) hook Stitches/Terms: beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), repeat (rep), round (rnd), single crochet (sc), slip st (sl st), stitch (st) Double crochet cross stitch group: skip next st, work double crochet in next st, reach back into skipped stitch and work double crochet to complete cross stitch. Note: Hat begins with single crochet rounds worked continuously, without joining at end of each round. Use contrast yarn or other marker to note beginning of rounds. On half double crochet and double crochet rounds, join with sl st at end of each round and chain up to height of next round as instructed. Size note: For Small size, work on 48 sts as instructed ; for Medium size, work on 60 sts as instructed ; for Large size, work on 72 sts as instructed. To change colors for 2-color hat: Work last stitch before color change until 2 loops remain on hook, pull new color through and continue working with new color, drop old color and carry up loosely inside hat until needed again. Hat Rnd 1: Ch 4, join into ring, work 6 sc in ring (or use disappearing loop beginning method: wind yarn around forefinger once, insert hook into loop, yo, pull loop through ring), ch 1, work 6 sc over strands of ring (when hat is complete, pull yarn tail to close ring.) Note: On single crochet rounds 2-11, work in continuous rounds without joining at end of each round. Use contrast yarn or other marker to mark beg of rounds. Rnd 2: 2 sc in ea sc around (12 sc) Rnd 3: 2 sc in ea sc around (24 sc) Rnd 4: Work 1 round even (24 sc) Rnd 5: \*2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from \* around (36 sc) Rnd 6: Work 1 round even (36 sc) Rnd 7: \*2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc, rep from \* around (48 sc) Rnd 8: Work 1 round even (48 sc) (Note: For Small size, skip to Rnd 12 and continue on 48 sts throughout) Rnd 9: \*2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc, rep from \* around (60 sc) Rnd 10: Work 1 round even (60 sc)(Note: For Medium size, skip to Rnd 12 and continue on 60 sts throughout) Rnd 11: \*2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in next 4 sc, rep from \* around (72 sc) Rnd 12: Work 1 round even, join with sl st at end of round - 48 (60, 72) sc (Note: From this point on, join with sl st at end of ea rnd and chain up to height of next rnd as instructed.) Rnd 13: Ch 2, work 1 hdc in ea sc around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2 - 48 (60, 72) hdc Rnd 14: Ch 3, work 1 dc in ea hdc around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 - 48 (60,72) dc (Note: For 2-color hat, join contrast color at this point, drop old color and carry up loosely inside hat until needed again.) Rnd 15 (cross stitch round): Ch 4, skip next dc, work dc in next dc, reach back into skipped st and work dc in that dc (cross stitch group completed), \*skip next dc, work dc in next dc, work dc into skipped dc (cross stitch group completed), rep from \* around, working last dc around beg ch to form last cross stitch group, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4 - 24 (30, 36 cross stitch groups) (Note: if there is 1 stitch remaining unworked at end of round before joining, skip it and work last dc around beg ch-4 to form last cross stitch group.) (Note: For 2-color hat, change to main color, drop contrast color and carry up loosely inside hat until needed again.) Rnd 16: Ch 3, work dc in ea dc around, join with sl st - 48 (60, 72) dc (Note: For 2-color hat, change to contrast color, drop main color and carry up loosely inside hat until needed again.) Rnd 17: Rep Rnd 15 - 24 (30, 36 cross stitch groups) (Note: For 2-color hat, change to main color, cut contrast color, leaving 6" tail to weave in later.) Rnd 18: Rep Rnd 16 - 48 (60, 72) dc Rnd 19: Ch 2, work hdc in ea dc around, join with sl st - 48 (60, 72) hdc Rnd 20: Ch 1, work sc in ea hdc around, join with sl st - 48 (60, 72) sc (Note: For Large size, additional rounds of single crochet can be worked at this point until hat is desired length.) Finishing: Work 1 round slip stitch loosely in ea sc around. Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
