Bev 's Basic Fingerless Mits

Materials: Worsted Weight Yarn - #4 (approx. 170 yds) Needles: 2 - 24" circular needles size 4 for cuff and 2 - 24" circular needles size 5 for hand and thumb areas. Darning needle Yarn to hold stitches Gauge: 5 sts to the inch in stockinette stitch Size: Fits most woman's hand. For larger size use size 6 needles for hand area On size 4 needle - CO 40 stitches. Divide evenly onto the two circular needles (20 stitches on each needle). Work in the round in K2, P2 rib for approximately 3" or desired length of cuff. After length has been reached for cuff, change to size 5 needles and knit two complete rounds.
Thumb increasing:
1. Needle 1: K18, P1, M1L, K1 Needle 2: K1, M1R, P1, K18 2. Needle 1: K18, P1, K2 Needle 2: K2, P1, K18 3. Repeat round 2 4. Needle 1: K18, P1, M1L, K2 Needle 2: K2, M1R, P1, K18 5. Needle 1: K18, place the next 9 stit onto a piece of yarn to hold. Using e-cast on - CO 2 stitches Needle 2: Place next 9 stitches ontc piece of yarn to hold, using the e-ca - CO 2 stitches, K18. The body of your fingerless mitt is now back to 40 stitches (20 on needle 1 and 20 on needle 2) Knit for approximately 1" (or 1%2’ short of desired length of glove). Begin working in K2, P2 rib for 1%2". Bind off in pattern loosely.
Thumb - using size 5 needles:
1. Needle 1: Place 9 thumb stitches onto needle 1 Needle 2: Place 9 thumb stitches onto needle 2 2. Needle 1: Starting in the center of the 4 cast on stitches at the base of the thumb and hand area. with your yarn, pick up and knit 2 stitches, plus M1L in the gap or looseness between cast on area and regular stitches. knit the remaining 9 stitches on your needle. (You should now be on the outside middle of the thumb) Needle 2: Knit 9, then pick up and M1R in the gap or looseness between the regular stitches and the cast on area. Pick up and knit the 2 remaining cast on stitches at the base of the thumb and hand area. (You should be in the middle of the inside of the thumb.) Make sure both needles have the same number of stitches on them. 3. Needle 1: K1, SSK, K9 Needle 2: K9, K2tog, K1 4. Knit 1 round. 5. Needle 1: SSK, P1, (K1, P1) 4 times Needle 2: (K1, P1) 4 times, K2tog, P1 Work in K1, P1 rib for 1". Bind off loosely in rib pattern. Sew in all ends. Abbreviations and Instructions
CO - cast on BO - bind off K - knit P- purl E or Loop Cast On - Hold your needle in your right hand. Grasp the working yarn in your left hand. Pass the working yarn around your thumb from back to front. Slip the needle tip under the loop around your thumb. Pull your thumb out of the loop and tug on the working yarn to tighten up the stitch. SSK - (Slip, Slip, Knit) Slip one stitch knitwise onto right needle, then slip a second stitch knitwise onto right needle. Insert left needle through the front of both slipped stitches from left to right crossing it in the front. Complete knit stitch by wrapping yarn around right (back) needle and pulling it through (similar to knitting the stitches through the back stitch). K2tog - knit two stitches together M1R - (Makes one stitch that leans to the right). Insert the left needle from back to front into the horizontal strand between the last stitch worked and the next stitch on the left needle. Knit this strand through the front loop to twist the stitch. M1L - (Makes one stitch that leans to the left). Insert the left needle from front to back into the horizontal strand between the last stitch worked and the first stitch on the left needle. Knit this strand through the back loop to twist it.
