Make a crochet chain with scrap yarn. Pick up 50 sts along crochet chain. Preparation: Knit 2 rows. Row 1: Sl1, K to last 5 sts. W&T. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8: Knit Row 3: Sl1, K to last 10 sts. W&T. Row 5: Sl1, K to last 15 sts. W&T. Row 7: Sl1, K to last 20 sts. W&T. Rows 9 & 10: Sl1, K to end. Rep rows 1 thru 10, 16x. Rep rows 1 thru 8, 1x. 180 rows incl prep rows. Undo crochet chain & transfer sts to 3rd needle. With needles parallel 3 needle tog 16 sts. Fold hat to other side & 3-needle tog rem 34 sts. Thread yarn thru end sts & pull tight. Sew in ends.
