This is a ribbed baby hat that really fits, stays on, and gets used by moms! This pattern is more of a guide to my formula for creating these hats. It is a very good lastminute' shower pattern as it can be knit in a day using any yarn handy. Following the basic process are specific numbers for some yarns and needles I have used.
Materials:
Yarn, any weight \~75 yds 16 inch Circular needle in the suggested size for your yarn Set of 4 double pointed needles in same size as circular 1 yarn needle
Process:

Newborn - 3 months (3-9months)
Cast on just enough stitches to stretch around your circular (really stretch them around, it should be a bit difficult) then add enough to make it a multiple of 4 stitches (For 3-9m: Add 4,8 or 12 more stitches or enough to add another 1-1.5inches of circumference, the stitches should be slightly easier to stretch around the circular.). Join being careful not to twist then knit in K2P2 ribbing until 8-10 ( 9-11) inches long, or enough to fold up a brim and still have 6 ( 7) inches of hat. There are several methods to decrease and close the top. Decrease 1: The easiest is to do a rapid decrease. It gives the top of the hat a cute gathered look. Switching onto the double points: 1. K2tog, P2tog around. 2. K1 P1 around. 3. K2tog around 4. Knit around Repeat last 2 rounds until you have less than 20 stitches remaining. Decrease 2: If you don't like the 'gathered’ style of the rapid decrease top, you can decrease slower for a smoother look, multiples of 8 stitches allow for an even 'slower' decrease. Switching to the double points: For multiples of 4 stitches: 1. K2 P2tog around 2. K2 P1 3. K1 K2tog 4. Knit 5. K2tog every stitch 6. Knit For multiples of 8 stitches: 1. K2tog P2 K2 P2 around 2. K1 P2 K2 P2 3. K2tog P1 K2 P2 4. K1 P1 K2 P2 5. K2tog K2 P2 6. K3 P2 7. K2tog K1 P2 8. K2 P2 9. K2tog, P2tog 10. K1 P1 11. K2tog every stich 12. Knit Repeat last 2 rounds until you have less than 20 stitches remaining. Cut yarn leaving a long tail then using a yarn needle, thread this tail through the remaining stitches, remove needles, pull yarn tight, and secure with a knot and sew in the end or use it to attach a tassel or pompom to the top.
