General Notes:
The basic pattern is for a flat knit, nine panel shawl. The design will probably look best in a solid or semi-solid yarn (such as a vat dye) or a gradient with VERY LONG colour changes. Another possibility is very short colour changes in related hues. Needle size should be chosen to give a relaxed drape to the fabric, but not as loose as most lace as the texture of the stitches is important. Due to the placement of the increases this should block quite easily into points. The overall shape should be slightly more than a half circle with a heart shape to the upper edge. The final page has an alternative full circle knit in the round version. ALL rows are charted AS WORKED. Even rows are read right to left, odd (ws) rows left to right. The right selvedge and edge are shown in the chart segment to the right. The vertical repeat is rows 10 & 11; continue in pattern once established. The left selvedge and edge are shown in the chart segment to the left. The vertical repeat is again rows 10 & 11; continue in pattern once established. Once past row 4 the central segment of the chart is repeated 9 times per row. Remember that the chart symbols are as worked and that odd rows are read left to right. The vertical repeat for the panels is lines 18 to 35. Continue in pattern as suggested by the chart, allowing for the additional stitches created on each repeat (the increases line up). Cast on: 5 stitches, leaving a long enough tail to sew up the cast on once completed. Work the main until approximately 18 rows less than your desired depth at gauge. Stop after a ws row. Work the edge. Copyright 2013MMario Leo aPola de Finale Emelia Free- Will donations may be made through PayPal to MMario@familyoffaire.com

As the number of stitches per segment will depend on yarn, needle and size choices some mathematics may be required. The example below assumes you have worked 125rows. (You want a multiple of 32 stitches to work the edge as charted. ) The right edge is reduced 1 stitch during working the edge and the left increased 1 stitch to balance the pattern in the 6 panels. Following round 145 as charted there are a few short rows to "corner" then rows 152 & 153 are repeated to "bind off" the edge. When you reach the last free stitch BEFORE the left selvedge (5 free stitches remain in total) repeat the short rows to make the second corner and then graft the remaining 4 stitches. VARIANT: Sleeping Smaug (circular knit) 1) Cast on 6; join and knit in the round; all rounds worked as charted reading right to left. 2) knit 3) knit 4) begin chart at round 2 of the chart - working ONLY the center section; after round 4 of chart there will be 18 repeats per round. Note - rather than a garter panel with stocking stitch ribs, the sleeping Smaug displays a stocking stitch panel with a garter rib.
