There should now be 23 heel stitches.
Gusset (both sizes):
The sole and gusset stitches will be knit in a 1x1 checkerboard pattern using colours A and D, and the instep will be worked using repeats of chart B. Setup round (to resume knitting in the round): SL1, join Colour D, and alternating one stitch of colour A and one stitch of colour D, K18(22). Still alternating colours, pick up and knit one stitch into each slipped stitch along the edge of the heel flap, plus one stitch in colour A after the slipped stitches to assist in closing the gap. Work row 1 of Chart B across the 41 instep stitches (place markers at start and end of instep if required), then pick up and knit one stitch to close the gap in colour A, and one stitch in each slipped stitch along the other side of the heel flap, again alternating colours A and D for each stitch, so that the last picked up stitch is colour A. This point will be the temporary start of round, until all following gusset decreases have been completed.
Gusset (both sizes, cont.):
Round 1: \* K1 colour D, K1 colour A \* repeat to 2 stitches before the instep, K2Tog using colour A, continue next row of Chart B to end of instep stitches, SSK using colour A, then starting with the opposite colour to the previous round \* K1 colour D, K1 colour A \* to end of round. Round 2: \* K1 colour A, K1 colour D \* repeat to 1 stitch before the instep, K1 using colour A, continue next row of Chart B to end of instep stitches, K1 using colour A, then starting with the opposite colour to the previous round \* K1 colour A, K1 colour D \* to end of round. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 (also repeating Chart B) until 72 stitches remain, ending in a round 2. Continue chekerboard pattern to 1 stitch before instep, then K1 in colour A. This will now be the start of the round.
Foot (both sizes):
Continue working Chart B for the instep and alternating Colour A and D in the checkerboard pattern for the sole stitches, with the first stitch after and before the instep always being worked in colour A. Work in this manner until the foot measures approximately 7cm (2.75") less than you want the finished foot to measure, ending with a round 4 of chart B. Break Colour D, leaving a tail to weave in later. Transition round: K42 in colour A, join Colour B and continue checkerboard pattern as previously knit in colours A and B to 1 stitch before the end of the round, K1 in colour A. Now work Chart C over the instep stitches and continue the checkerboard pattern alternating Colour A with colours B and C as per the colours used on that round for the instep chart.
Toe (both sizes):
Break colour A, leaving a tail to weave in later. The rest of the sock will be knit using only colour C. Setup Round: K42, SSK, Knit to 3 stitches before end of round, K2Tog, K1, then knit 3 additional stitches. This will be the new start of round, with the first 35 stitches being the top of the toe and the remaining 35 stitches being the underside. Place a centre of round marker between each half if needed. Round 1: K1, SSK, Knit to 3 stitches before centre of round, K2Tog, K2, SSK, Knit to 3 stitches before end of round, K2Tog, K1. Round 2: Knit all stitches. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 26 stitches left, ending in a round 1. Break yarn and graft remaining stitches together using Kitchener stitch. Weave in ends. Repeat all, unless you only want one sock.
