Friendly Cardigan

This is a one size fits many garment. My prototype is made according to the schematics illustrated (all measurements centimetres) but you can use your favourite plain pattern as a base. The neck and sleeve top shapings were cut and sewn. There are several critical features. The shoulders are based on the actual width of shoulders. The arm hole shaping is as short as comfortably possible to give ease of movement. Each front piece is full width, giving space for the stout, and drape for the slim. The jacket will hang with a narrow silhouette. The neck piece was made as a tension swatch, it is 22cm x 162 cm, folded over to enclose the cut edges of the neck and front shapings, extra length left to hang on one side. The prototype is knitted on a Passap machine using long stitch. The design should work just as well in stocking stitch, or something like a card one tuck stitch on a Japanese machine. The yarn used is 2/20 wool with a 2/60 thread of silk knitted off a yarn stacker.
