Amanda's Lace Knee Socks: A Custom Design for School Uniforms with Detailed Instructions

Amanda's Lace Knee Socks

Pattern illustration

Amanda's Lace Knee Socks were designed for my daughter to wear with her school uniform. In Puerto Rico, I could not find any knee socks of any size in any of the clothing stores. Searches online came up with no patterns, so I created this one. These knee socks need to be made in a very stretchy yarn with \*memory\* in fingering weight. In the sample, I used a nylon yarn. The calf for a small girl/age 5 measures 8 inches. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* Pattern Size: Young Girls Sock/XS Yarn Size: Fingering weight Yarn Quantity: (1) one ounce. Needles: One set of 4 size US2. Guage: 7.5 sts/inch and 8 rows/inch Abbreviations: CO=Cast On EOR=End Of Round K=Knit P=Purl St(s)=Stitch(es) SI=Slip SKP=Slip one stitch, knit one stitch, pass the slipped stitch over R=Row Tog=Together P/U=Pick Up N=Needle Note:The technique for the double YO is one that I had to experiment with for awhile with before I got it right. Instead of doing just a straight yo twice, I did the first YO the normal way--looping it directly around the needle and then, for the second one-- pick up the stitch from the finger off the front.... sort of creating a half hitch stitch like in macrame. Then when you come back on the next row, knit the first stitch tfl and the second tbl. That lays the far side "ladder" created by the YOs against the next knit stitch. \*\*It also works well doing just two normal YOs, but it's tighter knitting on the next row back than this way. In the blocking, they all seem to behave themselves and look right no matter which way you choose to knit the stitch. I used all three methods on my first pair and I can't seem to find the difference once blocked. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*

Cast on:

CO 40 sts onto one needle using a stretchy cast on stitch or go up a size of needle for just this cast on row. Divide sts on needles as follows: N1=10sts, N2=20sts, N3=10sts. Join by slipping the first stitch from N1 to N3 and bring over the original first stitch from N3 to N1--being careful not to twist the needles during the process so the edge stays straight.

Folded Picot Edge Hem:

Knit 5 rows. Picot edge row: \*K2tog, YO\* to EOR. Next 6 Rows: Knit all to EORs. Picot Hem: fold work in half to create the picot edge, then pick up and knit one stitch from the holding needle and one stitch from cast on edge to EOR. This will make a hemmed top that really doesn't need any elastic to help it stay up (40 sts). Next 2 Rows: Knit all sts to EOR.

Leg of Sock:

Diamond Lace Pattern (mult. of 10 sts) Row 1: \*YO, SKP, K1, K2tog, Double YO, SKP, K1, K2tog, YO\* to EOR. Row 2 and All Even Rows thru Row 16: Knit all sts. Row 3: \*K2tog, YO, K6, YO, SKP\* to EOR. Row 5: \*K1, K2tog, YO, K4, YO, SKP, K1\* to EOR. Row 7: \*K2, K2tog, YO, K2, YO, SKP, K2\* to EOR. Row 9: \*YO, SKP, K1, K2tog, Double YO, SKP, K1, K2tog, YO\* to EOR. Row 11: \*K3, YO, SKP, K2tog, YO, K3\* to EOR. Row 13: \*K2, YO, SKP, K2, K2tog, YO, K2\* to EOR. Row 15: \*K1, YO, SKP, K4, K2tog, YO, K1\* to EOR. Repeat Diamond Lace Pattern 3.5 times. (.5 = to row 7) Next Row (8th row of the pattern): K2tog, K to last 2 stitches, SKP. Stitch count check: N1=9 sts N2=20 sts N3= 9 sts

Holding both needles side by side--either graft/weave sts together for an invisible seam toe or close with a double needle bind off to form a chain of sts on toe edge. Steam lightly to block. ①Sheri Smith/Spin2Knit 2001 All rights reserved. Email if you have any questions.
