Cast on 48. Divide evenly on three DPNs. Join to work in round, being careful not to twist. Work 2x2 ribbing for 15 rounds. Knit stocking stich (knit all rounds) for 15 rounds. HINT: It is highly suggested that after the ribbing you place a marker to indicate the beginning of the round and move 3-5 stitches from one needle to the next after every 10 rounds or so to prevent laddering' from occurring in the join from one DPN to the next. Between moving the stitches around and the thumb gussets, having a beginning marker is very helpful. Below, the PM (place marker) and SM (slip marker) instructions are for the matching pair highlighting the thumb stitches. Put in the started of round marker whenever and however suits you best. Gusset Set up: K3, PM, M1L, PM, K to end. Knit 1 round. Gusset Increases: Round 1: K3, SM, M1R, K to marker, M1L, SM, K to end. Round 2: Knit all stitches. Repeat these two rounds until there are 19 stitches between the markers, ending with Round 1. Knit 10 rounds. Pattern by Jessica Powers Copyright 2011 Next: K3, remove marker, slip thumb stitches onto holder or waste yarn, remove second thumb marker, K to end. Knit 10 rounds. Work 2x2 ribbing for 6 rounds. Thumbs
Put the 19 thumb stitches onto two DPNs. With a third DPN pick up 3 stitches (22 stitches). Leave a long tail when you pick up your stitches so that you can use it to weave together any gaps that might occur at the base of the thumb. Knit to one stitch before the picked up stitches, K2tog, K1, PM, K2tog the last picked up stitch and the first thumb stitch - this is now the first stitch of every round (20 stitches). Work 2x2 ribbing for 6 rounds. Cast off in ribbing next round.
