Comprehensive Guide to Crocheting a Baby Flower Bonnet with Adjustable Sizes and Detailed Instructions

Baby flower bonnet

Pattern illustration

I made this pattern to match a dress by Jenny Watson for King Cole (design 7 in their "baby crochet book one" pattern book). Please note that the sizes are approximate; I am using online size charts as I have not yet been able to test the fit on an actual baby. The brim can be folded up if required. Abbreviations (using English stitch notation): dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; ss = slip stitch; ch = chain.

Materials:

shade 967, approx. 18g used for 3-6 month hat. 4mm crochet hook and 3mm crochet hor

Tension:

Approximately 15 stitches and 10 rows of treble crochet on a 10x10cm square. Stitches become further apart as hat progresses due to stretch.

For baby 3-6 months:

Hat measures approx. 13cm/5" from crown to end of treble crochet rows (14.5cm/5.75" from crown to edge of petals) with 39cm/15.5" circumference above the petals.

Hat:

Using a 4mm crochet hook, make a magic ring. Foundation round: 6 dc into ring 1st round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr). 2 tr into each of next 5 dc. 1 tr into dc at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (12 stitches). 2nd round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr).2 tr into each of next 11 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (24 stitches). 3'd round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr) \*1 tr into next stitch, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 23 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (36 stitches). 4th round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr). \*1 tr into next 2 stitches, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 35 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch,ssinto 2nd of 2 ch. (48 stitches). Rounds 5 - 12: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr). 1 tr into each of next 47 stitches, ss into 2nd of 2 ch (48 stitches in each round). Hat should measure approx. 13cm/52 from crown to brim.

Edging:

Change to 3mm crochet hook. 5 chain, \*miss one stitch, 1 dc into next stitch, 4 chain\* repeat from \* to \* until last stitch. ss into 1st of 5 chain. (24 chain loops). Change to 4mm crochet hook. 2 chain, 5 tr into next chain loop, \*dc into next chain loop, 6ch into next chain loop\* repeat from \* to \* until last chain loop, dc into chain loop, ss into 2nd of 2 chain (12 "petals"). Fasten off.

Finishing:

Sew in ends, making sure magic ring is pulled tight.

Adjustments for other sizes

To make a smaller hat:

Babies 0-3 months

Eliminate rounds 11 & 12 (will reduce length measurement so should fit well over a smaller head; the pattern has a fair amount of stretch). Proceed with edging as above.

Newborn baby

Eliminate round 4. Work pattern as for rounds 4-9 above as for 36 stitches. Eliminate rounds 10-12 and work edging starting with 36 stitches (will have 9 petals). To make a larger hat, insert the below rounds after 4th round above:

Babies 6-9 months

5th round: 3 ch (counts as 1\*t tr). \*1 tr into next 3 stitches, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 47 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (60 stitches). Proceed as with rows 5-12 above and edging until length from crown to brim is as desired, for 60 stiches instead of 48. Edging will have 30 4-chain loops and 15 petals.

Babies 9-12 months

5th round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr). \*1 tr into next 3 stitches, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 47 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (60 stitches). 6th round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr).\*1 tr into next 4 stitches, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 59 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ssinto 2nd of 2 ch. (72 stitches). Proceed as with rows 5-12 above until length from crown to brim is as desired, for 72 stitches instead of 48. Proceed with edging for 72 stitches (36 4-chain loops and 18 petals).

Toddlers & children

5th round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr). \*1 tr into next 3 stitches, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 47 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (60 stitches). 6th round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr). \*1 tr into next 4 stitches, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 59 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (72 stitches). 7th round: 3 ch (counts as 1st tr). \*1 tr into next 5 stitches, 2 tr into next stitch\* repeat from \* to \* for 71 stitches. 1 tr into stitch at base of 2 ch, ss into 2nd of 2 ch. (84 stitches). Proceed as with rows 5-12 above until length from crown to brim is as desired, for 60 stitches instead of 48. Proceed with edging for 84 stitches (42 4-chain loops and 21 petals).
