Materials: 1 ball each of KnitPicks Palette: Forest Heather, Aurora Heather, Canary, and Grass. Five #3 DPNs (or size needed to obtain gauge), and tapestry needle Gauge: 32 stitches and 32 rounds = 4” using #3 needles. Abbreviations: K2TOG: Knit 2 stitches together M1: Insert the left needle from front to back into the horizontal strand between the two stitches. Knit the stitch through the back loop.
MITTENS: Make 2
With DPNs, CO 56 (48) sts using Aurora Heather. Knit 2x2 rib for 2.5" (2") or desired cuff length. Then follow chart, through round 10 (6) To increase for thumb: Round 11 (7) M1at beginning of round, place marker, knit chart. Round 12 (8) Knit to marker, slip marker, knit chart. Round 13 (9) M1, knit to marker, M1, slip marker, knit chart. Round 14 (10) Knit to marker, slip marker, knit chart. unds through 34 (30). At end of round, C0 2 sts using backward loop method.\*\* Round 35 (31) Move 21 (19) thumb sts before marker to fifth DPN (or waste yarn) to be worked as thumb later. Follow chart for 52 sts (44), k2tog twice, keeping chart correct. 56 (48) stitches on needles. Rounds 36 (32)-65 (52): Knit chart. On adult mitt only: last round knit last 2 stitches together 55sts. Adult Decrease: K2TOG, K9, SSK around, (45 sts left) K1 round even. K2TOG, K7, SSK around, (35 sts left) K1 round even. K2TOG, K5, SSK around, (25 sts left) K1 round even. K2TOG, K3, SSK around, ( 15sts left) K1 round even. K2TOG,SSK around, (5 sts left) Move all 5 sts from needles to tapestry needle, and pull tightly. Secure from the inside. Child Decrease: k2TOG, K6, SSK around, (36sts left) K1 round even. k2TOG, K4, SSK around, (24sts left). K1 round even. k2TOG, K2, SSK around, (12sts left) K1 round even. K2TOG around, (6sts left) . . Move all 6sts from needles to tapestry needle, and pull tightly Secure from the inside.
Thumb:
Pick up 3 sts from body of mitten, knit 21(19) sts on 5"h DPN (or waste yarn) for a total of 24(22) thumb sts, join. Knit for 1.5 inches before beginning decreases. Adult Decrease: K4, K2TOG around, (20 sts left) K1 round even. K3, K2TOG around, (16 sts left) K1 round even. K2, K2TOG around, (12 sts left) K2TOG around (6 sts left) Move all 6 sts from needles to tapestry needle, and pulltightly. Secure from the inside. Child Decrease: K2, K2TOG,(K4,K2TOG) x3 (18sts left). K1 round even. K1, K2TOG, (K3, K2OG) x3 (14sts left). K1 round even. K2TOG (K2, K2TOG) x3 (10sts left). K2TOG around (5sts left) Move all 5sts from needles to tapestry needle and pull tightly. Secure from the inside. Finishing: Tie and trim all yarn ends. Wash and block
