By Jennifer Mumme @2008 This Pattern is a lacy design featuring a leaf motif and a column of mini cables going down either side of the leg. There is no ribbing on the cuff so it may be loose. The pattern creates a lovely scalloped border, so I opted not to use any ribbing. If you tend to have thin, dainty ankles and calves, you may wish to add about 5 rows of a K1P1 rib. It should not take away from the design and may add that extra “hold.?" Also, I normally use a size US 2 needle for socks and found that a US 1 worked better for this pattern. This sock requires some special techniques such as a "short row heel,”' cables, and a Kitchener grafting for the toe. There are many useful resources for these techniques online. (I.e. YouTube).
Materials:
Approximately 350-400 yards of fingering weight Yarn 1 Circular needle size US 1 $(2.25\;\mathsf{m m})$ Yarn needle to weave in ends Cable needle Size: Women's US 7-8 shoe. Knit next two Stitches. Knit the two stitches on the cable needle.

Leg:
Row 1: K1, \*YO, K3, SK2P, K3, YO, K1, rep from \* 3 times. P1, K4. Row 2 and all even numbered rows: K all stitches. Row 3: K1, $\star|\!\ll\!\rceil$ , YO, K2, SK2P, K2, YO, K2, rep from \* 3 times. Repeat rows 1-16 5 times or until desired length. End on Row 16. 0n last row, knit across 34 stitches on needle 1. Slip last two stitches onto needle two. On needle two, knit across 36 stitches and slip the last 2 stitches onto needle one. This “splits" the cable stitches so that the columns of cables will be exactly centered on either side of your leg. Begin short row heel with the 36 stitches on needle one as follows:
Heel:
1. Knit all stitches until there is one remaining. Turn work. 2. On the wrong/purl side, yarn over and purl all stitches until one stitch remains. Turn. 3. On the right/knit side, yarn over and knit up to the stitch/ yarn over pair. Turn 4. On the wrong/purl side, yarn over and purl to the first st/yo pair. Turn 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until 14 sts between the st/yo pairs remain. This occurs on a right side/ knit side. 6. Knit to the first st/yo pair. K1 (st from the st/yo pair), K2TOG, joining the yarn over to the knit stitch in the next st/yo pair). Turn. 7. On the wrong/purl side, yarn over and purl to the first st/yo pair. P1 (st from the st/yo pair). SSP (joining the yarn over and the purl stitch in the next st/yo pair). Turn. 8. On the right/knit side, yarn over and knit to the first yo and K3TOG (knit 2 yarn overs and knit stitch in the following stitch together). Turn. 9. On the wrong/purl side, yarn over and purl to the first yo. SSP (purl 2 yarn overs and the following stitch together). Turn. 10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 until the last stitch on the each end is consumed. (1 yo and 36 stitches). This is on a wrong/purl side row. 11. On the right/knit side, yarn over and knit up to the last remaining stitch and yarn over on the set of heel stitches. Slip these 2 stitches onto the needle holding the instep stitches.
Instep and Sole:
Row 1: Instep: Purl 1, purl the yarn over and next stitch together, purl 1. K1, $\mathrel{\star}\mathrel{\big/}0$ K3, SK2P, K3, YO, K1, rep from $^\star\,_{3}$ times. P2, slip last yarn over from sole stitches onto working needle and purl it together with last stitch. Knit across all 35 sole stitches. Row 2: Knit across. There should be 37 instep stitches and 35 sole stitches. Continue working pattern from leg beginning row 3, except now it's: 3 purl stitches, pattern ending with “..3 times.", 3 purl stitches, on odd rows (Do not do the P1 K4, or P1 C4F stitches, as these were only for the side cables). Sole is worked in stockinette. Knit all stitches on even rows. This maintains the leaf motif and gives it a 3-stitch border on either side for the instep. Continue in pattern until desired length ending on either a row 8 or 16. Begin toe decreases. Toe: Row 1: K1, SSK, knit across to last three stitches, K2TOG, K1. Repeat for needle 2 (sole stitches). Row 2: Knit across all Repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 27 instep stitches and 25 sole stitches. Work Row 1 until there are 15 instep stitches and 13 sole stitches.
Finishing:
Slip last stitch on instep needle to the sole needle. This leaves an even 14 stitches on both needles. Graft the toe using the Kitchener stitch method. Weave in ends. Block to bring out the scalloped “points" on the leg, if desired. Sample was knit using Fresh From the Cauldron SW Kona Sock in the "Appalachian Autumnal" colorway.
