Directions and Charts:
Border. With size 3 needles, cast on 8 stitches. Before you begin the chart, purl one row. Follow the chart instructions below to complete one leaf. Once you have finished the first leaf, repeat rows 1—18 twenty-two more times for a total of 23 leaves. Cast off.

The special\* symbol in the chart represents a stitch to bind-off. Body: Now that the leaf edge has been completed, pick up 4 14 stitches (one for each garter row) along the straight edge with your US size 4 circular needle, starting from the cast-on end to the bind-off end. Work three rows in stockinette stitch, purling your first row, knitting the second, and purling the third. You will now begin to incorporate the short rows for the crescent shaping. Knit 247 stitches, then turn, and purl 80 stitches. Next, knit 80 stitches, then turn, and purl 82 stitches. Turn again, and knit 84 stitches. Continue in this pattern of working 2 more stitches on each side before turning. When all the stitches have been completed, add three rows of garter stitch and cast off loosely. Sew in the ends with the yarn needle. When blocking, it is recommended that you stretch and pin the leaf points especially to accentuate them. Enjoy wearing your new, elegant shawl!
