ISABELLA AND ME

Mother-Daughter Hats

by Bonnie Dean Catch spring fever with coordinating striped hats in three sizes! The vibrant vertical color detail may be worked as slipped-stitch intarsia lines on a column of purl stitches, or by hand with duplicate stitch lines. An optional embellishment adds extra cuteness to the smaller hats. These hats are sure to cure the winter doldrums!

For Hats with Slipped Stitch Intarsia Lines:

This applies to the start and finish of each slip stitch and theknit stitch above andbelowtheslipstitch. Change to larger needles. Prepare bobbins for slipped stitches by cutting 7 [8, 9] pieces, 2 yds/2 m each, of Color C [C, A]. Wind each piece of yarn onto a bobbin. Work following the Slipped Stitch Charts or these written instructions: Round 1: With Color A [B, B], \*k11, sl st wyib; rep from\* to end. Crown Shaping for Intarsia Slipped Stitch Hats:

Technical note: As the hole at the top of the hat becomes too smalltomove thebobbins throughit, eitherpull allthebobbins through the hole or unwind the yarn off the bobbins to be able to continue toworktheyarn. Round 1: With Color B [B, C], \*knit to last st, sl st wyib; rep from\* to end. Round 2, 4, and 6: \*P1, knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog with Color C [C, A]; rep from\* to end. Rounds 3 and 5: \*P1, knit to last st before marker, sl st wyib; rep from\* to end. Rep Rounds 1-6 first with Color A [A, B], then with Color B [B, C]. Next Round: With Color C [C, A], \*k2, sl st wyib; rep from\* to end.

Finishing

Break yarn and weave through remaining sts, closing the hole at the top of the hat. Weave in all ends. Block. For Duplicate Stitch hats, use same color as ribbing to make as many duplicate stitch lines on the columns of knit stitches between the segments of the hat as desired, ending at the last color change near the top of the hat. Weave in all ends.

(Optional) Linen Stitch Embellishment (Sizes S and M)

With larger needles and Color C, CO 6 sts. Row 1: \*K1, yf, sl 1, yb; rep from\* to end. Row 2: \*P1, yb, sl 1, yf; rep from\* to end. Rep these 2 rows until strip is 6.5"/16.5cm from C0 edge. Bonnie Dean

Bonnie Dean lives in Billings, MT with her husband Edward. Their son Gavin from Boulder, CO introduced Bonnie to the knowledge of Chief Left Hand, a Southern Arapaho Chief who lived in the mid-1800's near Boulder and spoke English from childhood. She chose to name her company Chief Left Hand Knits, incorporating her love of hand knitting and her longstanding love of decorative and fine arts of Native American artists. along with the beauty of the spaces around Boulder where Chief Left Hand wintered. Bonnie is looking forward to applying her experience in fabric-based garment construction and design to a new medium.
