Fickle Knitter Design Volume 1: Leaves - Knitting Patterns for Shawls, Hats, and More by Michelle Miller

FICKLE KNITTER DESIGN Volume 1 LEAVES Eight knitting projects using 395 yards of yarn or less.

INTRODUCTION

Having grown up in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley I have had a life long love affair with leaves. In the fall every year the lush forests of the Shenandoah Valley turn from verdant green to sun dappled golds, fiery crimson, and pumpkin orange. The trees have one last hurrah before settling down into the cold and quiet winter season. But my love for leaves is twofold. I've been a voracious reader since my early childhood and my second love is in turning the many pages in countless books, sometimes called leaves. A book holds so much promise and potential enclosed between the flyleaf pages of the beginning and the end, you never know how you will be transformed in the in between. And so the concept for my first book, Leaves, was born with 2 patterns inspired by my fascination and 6 patterns directly featuring leaf motifs. I hope you'll enjoy your knitting journey as you knit with me. Every pattern has written and charted instructions where applicable and the whole work has been test knit and professionally tech edited to ensure the best patterns possible.

LEAF RELIEr COWL

I set upon designing the Leaf Relief Cowl after flipping through one of my favorite books for inspiration, A Handbook of Ornament by Franz Meyer originally published in 1888. The book has a plate of ivy leaves that served as a starting point for my design of this one skein cabled cowl. The cowl is knit flat, incorporating flowers and leaves with bobble accents to keep you engaged while knitting and you may knit from the chart or the written instructions. Knitting bobbles is easier than you think and your ability to knit them may surprise you!

PATTERN NOTES

This shawl is constructed of a main body with a knit-on lace edging. The body is constructed in a traditional triangle method, beginning with Chart A, then moving to Chart B after there are 25 sts. The knit-on edging begins with Edge Chart, working to the marked center stitch of the body. Short rows are used to shape the edging around the center point of the body. Written instructions are provided for all charts, so you may work from the charts or the written instructions. For more information on knitted lace triangle construction, see www.fickleknitter.com/ archives/2oog/12/knitted-lace-triangle-constructionby-michelle-miller.htm.

GOLDEN LEAF SHAWL

This one is for my sister, Miriam. The shawl is a traditionally constructed triangle shawl with a knit-on edging. Every Fickle Knitter design of this type incorporates short row sections to curve gracefully around the center point without pulling. The short row is worked and named because you stop short of knitting all the stitches on your needles. You simply turn your work where indicated in the pattern and work the next instruction exactly where you are. Many knitters have strong feelings about short row wrapping and turning. I eschew wrapping and turning as I don't find it required for my aesthetic. So regardless of your wrap and turn preferences short rows work magic by turning a 3D corner for toes and heels on Simple Flats and work equally well turning a 2D corner for a triangle shawl! I always use the same formula to create my short row center instructions. The first step is to place a removable stitch marker directly to the right of the center stitch. This stitch marker acts as a sanity check to make sure you are knitting the pattern correctly (hint: your center spine will create the stacked column of yo, k1, yo if you've diverged from the pattern). The stitch marker also works as a place marker for your short row center. In essence what you're doing is working one short row on either side of the center stitch. When you've consumed all the stitches in k2togs with main body and edge stitches and reach one stitch to the right of the center stitch it's time to begin your first short row pair. Then you'll work four regular rows (includes right and wrong side rows) which consume the remaining stitches through your center stitch. You will then work one last short row and then continue on knitting your edging as before. It really is that simple! There are no special tools needed and you avoid having to bind off hundreds of stitches all at once

WAVE OR ParTiClE SHAWL

I spent a fair amount of time in various laboratories as I earned two degrees in physics while in college and graduate school. My lab time was split between doing focused research and the weekly teaching of physics students enrolled in college level physics labs and astronomy students as well. Experiments were always my favorite part of the physics world and the light particle wave duality mystery was undoubtedly one of the most amazing things I could demonstrate. The students could see science in action for themselves for the first time and it was an eye opening experience for them, akin to the feeling you have after finishing your very first knitting project or viewing the moon for the first time through a telescope. This shawl was designed and knit in honor of my previous life in physics and as a reminder of the wonder of discovering something new. This shawl is knit by casting on a few stitches and every right side row grows larger on either side of the center spine and each edge by including a yarn over, for a total increase of four stitches per row. The wave edging is created using a knit-on edging.

SImPLE FLATS

My brother moved to Austria when I was a toddler and met one of his dearest friends, Christine, who is a native Austrian Knitter. As a child she was the first person I encountered who knit and I'd watch in wonder as any number of items sprang to life on the tips of her needles. The Simple Flats were inspired by a pair she hand knit for me in my childhood. This design was created based on my distant memory of Christine's slippers and my interpretation showcases a new twist: using short rows to work the heels and toes of the slipper. The slipper is knit completely flat and then folded in half with the sides sewn down and a pretty i-cord finishing treatment.

PATTERN

Cast on 14(14, 18, 18) stitches. All sizes work Short Row Sequence three times for heel.

SHORT ROW SEQUENCE

Row 1: P14(14, 18, 18) TURN. Row 2: K10(10, 12, 12) TURN. Row 3: P6(6, 6. 6), TURN. Row 4: K8(8, 8, 8), TURN. Row 5: P10(10, 10, 10) TURN. Row 6: K12(12, 12, 12) TURN. Row 7: P14(14, 14, 14). Row 8: K14(14, 16, 16). End Short Rows for size 8.25" & 8.75" Row 9: P0 (0, 18, 18). Row 10: K0(0, 18, 18).

SOLE

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until flat knitting measures 5.75 (6.25. 7.25. 7.75) inches and ending with a knit row.

TOE

All sizes work Short Row Sequence 3(3. 3. 3) times. Work in reverse stockinette stitch (purl 1 row, knit 1 row) for 1.5", ending with a purl row.

BIND OFFFORTOP OFFOOT

Row 1: K4(4, 5. 5). bind off 6(6, 8, 8) stitches, k 4(4, 5. 5). 4(4. 5. 5) stitches remain on each side. Put stitches on right side ontoholder.

SLIPPER SIDES

Row 1: P4(4, 5. 5). Repeat Row 1 & 2 until side measures 4.25 (4.5. 5.75, 6.25)". End with a knit row. Row 3: P2tog. p2(2. 3. 3). Bind off 3(3. 4, 4) stitches. Pick up stitches on holder starting from the right and repeat Slipper Sides instructions. Fold slipper in half and seam together attaching sides to the sole of each slipper with theknit sidefacing out.

APPLIEDI-CORD FINISHING

Using circular needle and beginning at back of heel, pick up one stitch for each cast on, side, and bind off stitches around the entire inside of the slipper. Cast on two additional stitches onto left needle. \*Knit 1 Stitch, slip one stitch purlwise, knit 1 stitch from the picked up stitches, and pass the slipped stitch over\*, slip the 2 sts back to the left hand needle; rep from \* until all of the picked up stitches are consumed. Bind off the two remaining stitches and sew two ends of i-cord together. Repeat for second slipper.

PATTERN NOTES

This shawl is constructed of a main body with a knit-on lace edging. The body is constructed in a traditional triangle method, beginning with Chart A, then moving to Chart B after there are 37 sts. The edging begins with Edge Chart, working to the marked center stitch of the body. Short rows are used to shape the edging around the center point of the body. Written instructions are provided for all charts, so you may work from the charts or the written instructions. For more information on knitted lace triangle construction, see/www.fickleknitter.com/ archives/2009/12/knitted_lace_tr.htm.

ShAWL In BLOOM

The Shawl in Bloom is a great example of my favorite way to design triangular shawls. You begin by casting on a few stitches and increase by 4 along either side of the center spine and on each side every other row, and repeating a small motif of 10 stitches (or less) for every repeat of the chart. After you reach the required number of stitches you will cast on for the knit-on edging without breaking your yarn or binding off your live stitches. This construction is my favorite because you don't find yourself binding off hundreds of stitches at once but rather consuming one stitch from the main body of the shawl each right side row when you knit an edge stitch together with a main body stitch.

PERENNIAL TOP DOWN SILK BERET

This hat is knit from the top down by casting on a few stitches for the crown and doubling your stitches every other row for four rows until the correct number of stitches is reached. At that point you will start the leaf motif. You will decrease down to form a close fitting brim after knitting the leaves for the body of the hat. The unusual and eye catching positioning of the leaves in the hat is due to the direction of knitting, from the top down. The hat pattern includes two different sized bind offs for customization of your hat. If your head is 21 inches or smaller knit the smaller sized bind off making sure to use the sewn bind off as loosely as possible. All larger sizes should use the Larger sized bind off method.

PHOTOSYNTHESISWRISTLET

The secret of the Photosynthesis Wristlet is that it is knit using exactly the same instructions as the Perennial Beret! You knit exactly as you did before using a thinner yarn and smaller needles all the way to the end, where youll knit handles instead of a brim. I wrote this pattern specifically to show how you can use exactly the same pattern with different needles and yarn and end up with a totally different result. You can use this concept in all types of knitting-if you love a sweater pattern that doesn't have your size you may knit it with a larger or smaller yarn (depending on your needs) to adjust up or down.

PATTERN NOTES

This shawl is constructed in a traditional triangle method, beginning with Setup Rows through Row 6 and 13 stitches, working Chart A through Row 88 and 189 stitches, then moving to Chart B through Row 119 and 249 sts. Written instructions are provided for all charts, so you may work from the charts or the written instructions.

TULIPAN SHAWL

Tulipan Shawl diverges from my typical Triangle Shawl design process and is one of my new favorites. The shawl is knit with a large leaf and flower motif that starts at the beginning of the knit and continues through two large charts to the end without a knit on edge and by the time you've finished Row 118, your flowers have bloomed you're done!
