The Nutmeg Cowl is a great project for beginning knitters to expand their skills with a sophisticated stitch pattern that is much easier to knit than it appears! This pattern is knit with straight needles, not circular.
Materials
72 yards super bulky yarn (shown: Lions Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick acrylic/wool yarn) (alternate suggestions: Plymouth Mega Encore, Twinkle Soft Chunky, Blue Sky Bulky Alpaca) Size 17 knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) One size larger needle (optional, for binding off) Gauge 8 stitches and 10 rows $=4^{\prime\prime}$ in pattern, blocked

US measurements Length before sewing ends: 42.5" Circumference after sewing ends: 21" Width when flat: 9" Metric measurements Length before sewing ends: 107.95 cm Circumference after sewing ends: 53.34 cm Width when flat: $22.86~\mathsf{c m}$ Notions Tapestry needle or crochet hook for weaving in ends Abbreviations BO: bind off CO: cast on k: knit p: purl psso: pass slipped stitch over rep: repeat sl: slip stitch st(s): stitch(es) RS: right side WS: wrong side yo: yarn over COWL Using method of choice, CO 42 stitches. Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 and all even rows (ws): Purl. Rows 3 and 5: rep row 1. Rows 7 and 9: k1, \*sl1, k1, yo, psso both the knit st and yo; rep from \* to end. Rows 11 and 13: rep row 1. Rep rows 7-13 two more times (three times total). Rep rows 1-2 three times. BO loosely or using the one size larger knitting needle, leaving a long tail (at least three times the width of the ends you'll be sewing together). Block your cowl before attaching ends. Using your tapestry needle, sew the ends together, encouraging the top and bottom edges' natural curl. Weave in ends.
