She reached into the top drawer and slipped on the coziest pair among the bunch... As the seasons change and the nights grow longer we need small comforts to protect us from the evening chill. This pair starts with the cuff, then stitches are picked up for the foot. You can even knit the foot in a contrasting yarn if you'd like. When completed, real buttons function like a cardigan sweater for added warmth. This pattern also includes some hot drink recipes for you to explore while knitting your own pair of extra thick Socks. This adventurous beginner pattern is written using the magic loop or 2-circular method, where half the stitches are on N1, and the other half are on N2. You can easily divide these stitches again for double pointed needles. Working cables without a cable needle: There are many tutorials online to use when learning this technique. NOTE: In this next section you are picking up stitches and knitting in the round with the larger needle. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce a new color of yarn if you'd like! Starting on the inside of the cuff at the BO edge, pick up and knit 36 (40, 44) sts evenly along inside of cuff, about 1/2 - inch up from bottom edge (See picture). Proceed to heel.

Heel:
You decide the placement of the button band on your leg. To align button band over the left back of foot, proceed to heel flap. To align button band over the left front of foot, knit 5 (6, 7) sts, then proceed to heel flap. To align button band over the right back of foot, knit 31 (33, 35) sts, then proceed to heel flap. Recipes:
Hot Chai (serves 3) Ingredients: 1 1/2 cup milk (any kind) 1 1/2 cup water 1 large strip of orange peel 2 cardamom pods 5 whole cloves 1 cinnamon stick 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 3 whole black peppercorns 1 generous pinch freshly grated ground nutmeg 3 teaspoons honey 2 black tea bags

Directions:
Combine the milk and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat until warm. Add orange peel, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon stick, ginger, peppercorns, nutmeg, honey and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for ten minutes, then remove from heat. Add tea and let steep about five minutes. Strain out spices, and pour into cups. OPTIONAL: Add 3 ounces of spiced rum, irish cream OR bourbon to the chai when adding the tea bags. Hot Spiced Cider (serves 16) Ingredients: 2 quarts apple cider 1/2 teaspoon whole allspice 1 teaspoon whole cloves 1 cinnamon stick 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 generous pinch freshly grated ground nutmeg 1 large orange, cut into quarters (with peel) Directions: Combine all ingredients in a big pot and simmer over low heat for at least twenty minutes. The longer it simmers, the more intense the flavor. OPTIONAL: Add a pint of rum (regular, dark or spiced) to the cider just before serving. It's okay for the alcohol to simmer, but don't let it boil away. Hot and hotter hot chocolate (serves 2) Ingredients: 1/2 cup semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate chips 1 cup milk (any kind) 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 scant pinch cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
Directions:

Combine chocolate and 1/2 cup of milk and either microwave for 20 second intervals until heated through and melted all the way OR heat in a saucepan on the stove until hot and melted all the way. Whisk in cinnamon, cayenne, espresso powder and almond extract until espresso is dissolved. Add 1/2 cup milk and microwave an additional 20 seconds or until hot OR whisk over medium heat until hot. Strain into 2 mugs and top with whipped cream. OPTIONAL: Add 2 ounces of amaretto, kahlua or irish cream to the hot chocolate mixture just before serving. Tom and Jerry Batter Ingredients: 12 eggs 3 pounds powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 oz brandy 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves For each serving: 1 heaping tablespoon batter 1 oz dark rum, brandy or whisky 6 oz hot milk Nutmeg
Directions:
Separate the eggs and beat the whites into a stiff froth. Add the sugar to the yolks and beat them until they are thin and watery, gradually adding 4 ounces of brandy and the spices. Finally, fold the whites into the yolks. The batter may be stored refrigerated for several weeks. When ready to serve, give the batter a stir and place 1 heaping tablespoon in a small mug or tumbler. Add 1 ounce of your preferred alcohol, stirring constantly to avoid curdling. Fill to the top with hot milk and whisk until a light foam develops. Finally, grate a nice nutmeg garnish over the surface. If you find the drink to0 rich and filling, you may be happier substituting half the hot milk with boiling water. Tom & Jerry batter also goes well with hot coffee.
