YARN
Meadowcroft Dyeworks Rockshelter Worsted (200 m / 218 yards per 100 grams) yarns are recommended for their vibrance, saturation, wide colorway selection and the ultimate in softness. A kit with more than enough yarn to complete this hat is also available in several color combinations from your LYS or from www.yarn.rehab if they don't carry it. You'll need 37.5 yards each of 6 colors and 75 yards of the dominant or main color. These are the yarns used in the example above: A 040 Being - 75 yards B 022 Punta Alen - 37.5 yards C 009 Spirogyra - 37.5 yards D 033 Morning Glories - 37.5 yards E 162 Delirious - 37.5 yards F 012 Zempuala - 37.5 yards G 047 Grasshopper - 37.5 yards While any colorway can be used, I would suggest avoiding the use of the highly variegated
GAUGE & NEEDLES
21 sts and 25 rows per 4" / 10cm in Fair Isle using US 8 / 5.0 mm needles or whatever size is needed to meet gauge. 16" US 7 / 4.5 mm circular needles 16" US 8 / 5.0 mm circular needles US 8 / 5.0 mm double point needles
SIZES
Measure circumference of the head of the intended wearer from back of neck to top of forehead and back again. Instructions are for L- 25" (S - 21", M - 23", XL - 27"). Large wil fit most adults.
JOINING ENDS
Joining the ends of superwash yarns can't be by spit-splice, but a number of excellent videos demonstrating at least 2 Russian joining techniques can be found on YouTube, etc. It is recommended that one of these be used when changing colors.
KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS
With mc & US-7 circular needles, CO 112 (98, 106, 120) sts, join being careful not to twist sts, pm. \*K1 mc, p1 c, repeat from \* to m, sm. Repeat this rnd 11 (10, 10, 11) more times. K1 rnd mc, rm, wt. K1 rnd to ws, pu wrap & k tog with ws, pm. Note: the viewing side changed, and youll continue working to end of hat with the viewing side of the cuff facing in. \*With mc & US-8 circular needles, k5, k into f & b of 6th st, repeat from \* 17 (15, 16, 18) more times; k any remaindered sts to m - 126 (112, 120, 134) sts, sm. Follow charts 1, 2, and then 1 again. In last row of the 2nd time through chart 1, \*K12, k2tog, repeat from \* 8 ( 6, 6, 8) more times; k any remaindered sts to m - 117 (103, 111, 125) sts, Sm. Follow chart 3. In last row of chart 3, \*k3tog, k10, repeat from \* 8 (6, 6, 8) more times; k any remaindered sts to m - 99 (89, 97, 107) sts, sm. Follow chart 4. In last row of chart 4, \*K2, k2tog (x2), k1, k2tog, repeat from \* 8 ( 6, 6, 8) more times; k any remaindered sts to m - 72 (68, 76, 80) sts, sm. Follow chart 5. In last row of chart 5, S & L only: \*k2tog, repeat from \* to m, sm. - L; 36 (S; 34) sts. Or M & XL only: \*k2tog, repeat from \* to within 3 st of m, sl2 as if to knit, k1, psso, Sm. - (M; 38, XL; 41) sts. Follow chart 6. In last row of chart 6, S & L only: \*k2tog, repeat from \* to within 3 st of m, sl2 as if to knit, k1, psso, sm. - L; 18 (S; 17) sts. M & XL only: \*k2tog, repeat from \* to m, sm. - (M; 19, L; 20) sts. \*K1 A, k1 B, repeat from \* to m 1 rnds. \*K2tog A, k2tog B, repeat from \* to m, sm - 9 (9, 10, 10) sts. \*K1 A, k1 B, repeat from \* to m, rm, cut tail to 8" / 20cm, thread tail through remaining sts and remove from needle, draw tight, pull tail to inside.
FINISHING
Wash, fold cuff at p row, block over styrofoam head or lay flat until dry, cut off ends if a Russian join was used or weave in ends if not.
