Note:
This infinity scarf or cowl is knitted in brioche stitch. It creates interesting ribbing. Two rows (rounds create one row (round) in pattern. More information about brioche stitch can be found on websites http://www.briochestitch.com/ or http://www.purlbee.com/2013/09/26/brioche-stitch/ For an interesting and finishing edge I-cord is added to both sides of work by binding off in I-cord technique and attaching I-cord to the cast on edge.
Special bind off technique:
Use the I-cord bind off technique for bind off. Cast on 3 additional sts on left needle. Position the yarn behind work as follows: Knit first 2sts. Knit next 2sts together. This decreases the 2sts to 1st. Return the 3sts back onto left needle and repeat. Please remember that the Sl st and YO are considered as 1 st and therefore should be decreased together. If you are not sure, how to do bind off with I-cord, I have found very useful the book Cast On, Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor. There are also plenty of YouTube videos.
I-cord edge:
With yarn cast on 3 sts on DPN needle. Join the I-cord with the cast on edge by picking up 1 sts through the edge. Position the yarn behind and work as follows: Knit first 3 sts. Knit next 2 sts together. Return the 4 sts back onto left needle and repeat. Continue to work in I-cord attaching the I-cord along the edge until you reach the beginning of your I-cord. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and thread the end on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches on the needles, gather up and close the hole, stitch to secure. Gauge: 22 sts & 28 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch. 12 sts & 46 rows = 4" in brioche stitch.
INSTRUCTIONS:
With the yarn and circular needles cast on 90 sts for cowl (150 sts for double wrapped cowl, 220 sts for infinity scarf) sts. Place the stitch marker on the first st and begin working in the round. R 1 (Set up round): \*K1, Sl st YO; repeat from \* around.
