osalie Shauslette
by Sharon Jane for fivemoons ycrrs
A light and feminine shawlette to display a pretty skein of multicoloured sock yarn, but not requiring too much attention for the stitch pattern. The diamond panel adds interest, but can be omitted to give the simplest of lacy wraps.

Finished Size
Blocks to wingspan 64in, drop 24in
Requirements
4.5mm needles, straight or circular as preferred 100g fivemoons Luna 4ply (100% superwash merino; 100g/400m/437yd) or Luna plus 4ply (75% superwash merino, 25% nylon; 100g/425m/464yd) (sample above shown in Luna 4ply 'Rose Garden ooak') stitchmarker tapestryneedle
Tension
22 stitches and 26 rows in unblocked stocking stitch to measure 10x10cm or 4x4in, using 4.5mm needles or size required to obtain tension. Tension is not crucial but will affect the overall size of the finished shawl: the pattern uses about 70g of Luna 4ply as written, so there is some leeway to knit looser or add in extra rows to enlarge the shawl.
Abbreviations
st = stitch rep = repeat k = knit p = purl sl = slip pm = place marker sm = slip marker yo=yarnover k2tog = knit two together ssk = slip next two stitches knitwise, then purl them together through the backs of their loops
Stitch Pattern
NB The patterns are mirrored either side of the shawl's central spine, so k2tog is replaced by ssk in the written instructions. Mesh stitch (multiple of 2 sts) row 1 (RS): \*yo, k2tog, rep from \* row 2 (WS): k all sts (note that this would produce vertical columns of eyelets, but as the shaping increases are made and incorporated into the pattern they become diagonals.) Diamond panel: (multiple of 11 sts) Row 1 (RS): k all sts Row 2 and every even (wS) row: p all sts Row 3: \*k5, k2tog, yo, k4, rep from \* Row 5: \*k4, (k2tog, yo) twice, k3, rep from \* Row 7: \*k3, (k2tog, yo) 3 times, rep from \* Row 9: \*k2, (k2tog, yo) 4 times, rep from \* Row 11: \*k1, (k2tog, yo) 5 times, rep from \* Row 13: \*k2, (k2tog, yo) 4 times, rep from \* Row 15: \*k3, (k2tog, yo) 3 times, rep from \* Row 17: \*k4,\*(k2tog, yo) twice, rep from Row 19: \*k5, k2tog, yo, k4, rep from Row 21: k all sts
Picot cast off
With RS facing, cast off 2 sts, \*sl remaining st from right to left needle, cast on 2 sts, cast off 4 sts, rep from \* to end and fasten off remaining st.
Notes
Pattern is worked back and forth in rows, top down from a garter tab, with a 2- stitch garter border. The first stitch of every row is slipped purlwise. All stitches are knit, except WS diamond panel stitches which are purl. The centre stitch is alwaysknit.

Instructions Create garter tab:
Cast on 2 sts and knit 7 rows to give 3 ridges of garter st. Turn work 90 degrees and pick up 1 st in each of the 3 ridges (5 sts). Turn work again and pick up 2 sts from the cast on edge (7 sts). Set up borders and central stitch: Row 1 (Rs): sl1, k1, yo, k1, yo, pm, k1, yo, k1, yo, k2 (11 sts). Rows 2 and 4 (ws): sl1, k to end, sm when you come to it. Row 3: sl1, k1, yo, k3, yo, sm, k1, yo, k3, yo, k2 (15 sts). Commence mesh pattern: Row 5: sl1, k1, yo, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, yo, sm, k1, yo, (ssk, yo) twice, k1, yo, k2 (19 sts). Row 6 and every even (ws) row: sl1, k to end, slipping marker when you come to it. Row 7: sl1,k1, yo, k1, (yo, k2tog) 3 times, yo, sm, k1, yo, (ssk, yo) three times, k1, yo, k2 (23sts). Row 9: sl1, k1, yo, k1, (yo, k2tog) 4 times, yo, sm, k1, yo, (ssk, yo) 4 times, k1, yo,k2 (27sts). Continue as set, increasing 4 sts on every RS row until 159 sts are reached. Enc with a WS row. (ie 34 more inc rows, so ending once row 75 is completed). Sharon Jane 2010 fivemoons Rosalie Slaulette v.1.3 info@fivemoons.co.uk www.fivemoons.co.uk

Recommence mesh pattern:
With WS facing, and beginning with a WS row: work 10 rows in mesh pattern (223 sts). With WS facing: sl1, k to 1 st before stitch marker, kfb, discard marker, k to end (224sts). Work picot cast off
Finishing:
Darn in ends using tapestry needle Block to open up stitch pattern.

Variations on a theme:
The recommended yarn is a strong, soft and smooth sock yarn with good stitch definition that blocks crisply and well. By knitting rather than slipping the first stitch as instructed, it will be possible to stretch the shawlette's wingspan during blocking much more. If you wish to block hard, do not substitute with too delicate a yarn. If substituting with a very fluffy yarn, try going up a needle size to ensure the holes in the mesh and lace pattern aren't 'filled in'. The two versions pictured on this page are knitted as written, but without the diamond panel, and the shawl is continued in mesh until the yarn almost runs out. The shawl to the right took just under 100g of fivemoons Artemis 4ply, and above took almost 200g of RowanPurelife Revive (double knit) worked on 5.5mm
