Ten Ten Cow!

The cowl is the result of a design challenge. The challenge: design an accssory y that uses the majority of 8 skeins of various shades of yarn. (suggestions included). So.... the initial prototype used all the yarn down to the last 6 inches. Yikes - not the best idea; pattern adjusted. My appreciation to everyone who was a part of our mystery knit along where this was initially unvieiled. It starts off boring ande gets progressively more interesting. Fun to knit and fun to wear, ideal in my book. OneSize Finished Circumference: 68" Yarn: Claudia's Hand Painted Yarns Addicton (100% very fine merino wool, 50 gm 175 yds), 8 skeins various colors Materials: US size 4 (3.5mm) needles. Gauge: before blocking- 24 sts 51 rows over 4" in garter stitch after wearing (blocking) 25 sts and 41 rows.

Overview;
With the first 3 yarn colorways, you will be knitting a long skinny piece in garter stitch, this strip will be connected into the round and then the edges will be added by knitting in the round.
Yarn 1.
Cast on 32 stitches. You can use a provisional cast on if you like. Row 1: Knit 31 stitches, purl 1. Row 2: Slip 1st stitch as if to knit, knit 30 sts, purl 1. Repeat row 2 for a total of 244 rows (or 122 garter stitch ridges).
Yarn 2.
Continue in pattern (Row 2) for a total of 236 rows (or 118 garter stitch ridges).
Yarn 3.
Continue in pattern (Row 2) for a total of 240 rows (or 120 garter stitch ridges). Do not cut yarn. Now, using 3 needle bind off connect the two ends of the fabric to create a single loop. Be sure not to twist the loop. Feel free to check out the Knit Purl Hunter Three-Needle Bind offVideo www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7u24g3WNXcefeature=youtu.be
Abbreviations
K - knit K2tog - knit 2 together Kfb - knit in the front and back Pfb - purl in the front and back Yo - yarn over Ssk - slip, slip, knit
Yarn 4 Mountains e Valleys
Decide whether you want the 3 needle bind off to be on the right side or the wrong side of your cowl & mark the right side. There really is not a true wrong side to this cowl but for instruction purposes it is important. With right side facing you and midway down one of the yarns in the loop, begin picking up edge stitches -- one stitch per garter ridge, this is where your purl & slipped stitch create a clear stitch to pick up. My math says you should have 360 stitches, don't worry if you are off by a few. Place a marker so that you will recognize your beginning of round.

Yarns 4 and 5 Round 1: (increase round) Purl 5 , Pfb around. You want to end up with 422 stitches. If this does not work out exactly you can finish your adjustments on the next round. Rounds 2 & 3: Purl all stitches. Rounds 4 - 6: Knit all stitches. Rounds 7 - 9: Purl all stitches Rounds 10 - 12: Knit all stitches. Rounds 13 - 15: Purl all stitches. Round 16: Knit around increasing 22 stitches evenly around AND AT THE SAME TIME placing a market every 48 stitches (there is a 12 stitch repeat coming, so place markers where you want them to help you keep track of the pattern). You can work these increases by .. (knit 18, Kfb) around or .... (knit 19, make 1) around You should have 444 stitches. Rounds 17 - 21: work Pattern Stitch, this takes you through round 5 of the pattern. Yarn 5 Lace Edge At round 6 change to yarn color 5 and finish the pattern stitch with this yarn. Repeat pattern rounds 1 - 10. At end of pattern stitch rounds bind off with Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy BindOff www.youtube.com/watch?v=53Mtbkyf5cq.

Lace Pattern Stitch.
Pattern rounds 1, 3, 5, 7. [(K2tog) 2 times , (yo, ssk) 3 times, yo, (ssk) 2 times, k1] repeat around. (444 sts) Pattern rounds 2, 4, 6, 8. Knit around. Pattern round 9: Knit around. Pattern round 10: Purl around. Pattern round 1l: Knit around. Pattern round 12: Purl around. So.. . the Pattern stitch is knit twice. Rounds 1-5 with yarn 4 and rounds 6-12 and the repeat of rounds 1-10 with yarn 5. You will need approximately 25 yards for the bind off. I wanted to finish with a purl bind off. Rather than purling and binding off at the same time, I chose to wrap & turn and bind off in knit with Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.
Yarn 6 Rib
Turn your work and pick up the other edge of the garter stitch center loop. With the WRONG SIDE facing, pick up the 362 stitches (as before) and running an unwaxed flat dental floss (or some similar “life line? type yarn such as a hard-finish light weight cotton) over and under yarn 6 as you are picking up the edge stitches. Later on with Yarn 7 you will be using this “life line? to help you pick up the the loop of these stitches (Yarn 6).

Round 1: Place beginning of round marker. (P5, m1, P5, ml, P4, m1) around. You should have 440 stitches. Rounds 2 - 16: (P10, K10) around. Bind off using Jenys Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Of. NOTE: Instructions are presented with 2 versions, please read through carefully before committing. e-increase - cast on 1 st using the e-loop meth Yarns 7 and 8 Rufle. Knitting in the Round With Yarn 7, pick up the backs of YARN 6 using the life lime thread to help. The life line is there to help you see them, remove the life line as you pick up the stitches (362 sts). Round 1: Place beginning of round marker. Purl around 362 stitches. Round 2: Purl around. Round 3: (K1, yo) around. 724 sts. Round 4: Knit around. Round 5: (K1, yo) around. 1448 sts. Round 6: Knit around. Round 7: [(K1, e-increase) 7 times, k1] around. 2715 sts. Change to YARN 8: Round 8: Knit around. 2715 sts. Round 9: Knit around. Bind off all stitches. NOT a loose bind off. As the stitch count increased, Ifound it easiest to use 3 60" needles.I would knit from one needle onto a fresh needle (without stitches on it). So, half the stitches would be on each of 2needles and a3rdneedle availabletoknit onto. This seemed to prevent excessive strain on my needles and hands. Pick some even number of stitches and work flat back and forth through the following instructions, bind off, then repeat until you've gone all the way around the cowl. The finished fabric will hide your breaks, or you can seam them together. Using Yarn 7, pick up an even number of stitches in the back of the yarn 6 pick up stitches. Row 1: (ws) Knit across. Row 2: Purl across. Row 3: (P1, yo) across ending with a P1. (ignore the final yo) Row 4: Knit across. Row 5: (P1, yo) across ending with a P1. Row 6: Knit across. Row 7: [(K1, e-increase) 7 times, k1] across, knowing you will probably end up in the middle of a repeat. Not to worry.
