Thorn Leaf Scarf Pattern: A Knitting Guide for a Snuggly, Nubbly, Wobbly Warm Neck Wrap with Noro Silk Mountain Yarn

Thorn Leaf Scarf

by Rebecca Zoe O'Brien nomadwarp@gmail.com 2014, Nomad Warp Textile Arts A scarf pattern that uses two to four skeins (depending on desired length) of Noro Silk Mountain boucle yarn or similar bulky weight yarn to make a snuggly nubbly wobbly warm neck wrap shaped like a long leaf. Please don't reproduce this pattern but feel free to knit this scarf for personal use or sale. Note : when joining new yarn on, try to match up colour progression of striping to match. This may involve unrolling a skein and cutting to make the ends match in colour.

Sizes

One adult size scarf, approx. gauge : 3 stitches and 4 rows per inch. Length of longer scarf pictured which uses 4 skeins of Noro Silk Mountain is approx. 68" long. Length of shorter scarf pictured is which uses 2 skeins of Noro Silk Mountain is approx. 38" long. Width is approx. 10".

Materials

Yarn : 2 to 4 skeins of Noro Silk Mountain or similar yarn. Long scarf in shade #14, short scarf in shade #5. Needles : a pair of 6.5 mm needles Darning needle or tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Instructions

Beginning of Scarf

1) Cast On 1 stitch. Knit 3 stitches into first stitch. Knit 2 rows. 2) Knit 2, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 3) Knit 3, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 4) Knit 1 row. 5) Knit 4, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 6) Knit 5, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 7) Knit 1 row. 8) Knit 6, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 9) Knit 7, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 10) Knit 1 row. 11) Knit 8, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 12) Knit 9, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 13) Knit 1 row. 14) Knit 10, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 15) Knit 11, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 16) Knit 1 row. 17) Knit 12, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 18) Knit 13, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 19) Knit 1 row. 20) Knit 14, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 21) Knit 15, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 22) Knit 1 row. 23) Knit 16, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 24) Knit 17, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 25) Knit 1 row. 26) Knit 18, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 27) Knit 19, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 28) Knit 20, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 29) Knit 1 row. 30) Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off the those 3 stitches and then bind off the 4 stitches beyond that. Knit to the end of the row. 31) Repeat previous step one more time. There should now be only 14 stitches remaining On the needle.

Middle of Scarf

\*Knit two rows. Knit 13, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 14, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 1 row. Knit 15, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 16, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 1 row. Knit 17, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 18, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 1 row. Knit 19, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 20, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. Knit 1 row. There should now be 22 stitches on the needle. Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off the those 3 stitches and then bind off the 4 stitches beyond that. Knit to the end of the row. Repeat previous step one more time. There should now be only 14 stitches remaining on the needle.\* Repeat steps between the asterisks until scarf reaches desired length. Two skeins of Noro Silk Mountain will make a scarf with 7 of these parts. The longer scarf pictured uses 13 repeats.

End of the Scarf

1) Knit two rows. 2) Knit 13, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 4) Knit 14, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 5) Knit 1 row. 6) Knit 15, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 7) Knit 16, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 8) Knit 1 row. There should now be 18 stitches on the needle. 9) Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off the those 3 stitches and bind off the the 3 stitches beyond that. Knit to the end of the row. 10) Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off the those 3 stitches and bind off the the 3 stitches beyond that. Knit to the end of the row. There should now be only 12 stitches remaining on the needle. 11) Knit two rows. 12) Knit 11, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 13) Knit 12, pick up 1 stitch in between the last two stitches at the end of the row to make an increase and then knit last stitch on the needle. 14) Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off the those 3 stitches and bind off the the 6 stitches beyond that. Knit to the end of the row. 15) Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off the those 3 stitches and bind off the the 6 stitches beyond that. Knit to the end of the row. There should now be only 4 stitches remaining on the needle. 16) Knit 4 rows. 17) Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off those 3 stitches and bind off 2 of the stitches beyond that. Knit 2 remaining stitches. 18) Cast on 3 stitches onto the end of the last row, turn work, and then bind off those 3 stitches and bind off 2 of stitches beyond that. Knit into bound off stitch just beyond the last stitch knit and bind off that stitch. Then do that one more time. Cut off yarn leaving a tail and pull that through the last stitch on the needle, pulling it tight. Fasten end off yarn and weave in remaining tails with darning/tapestry needle
