Because You Can Never Have Too Much H..

by Rachel Anderson (Tomyris) Thorn Maiden Designs A pattern for the mathematics geek - pi to 50 decimal places covers the crown of this hat. This makes a warm, close-fitting beanie, or, lightly felted, a groovy fez! Yarn: Bulky Pure New Wool, giving gauge (row gauge is not critical), in 2 complementary colours for 'pop', or adjacent colours for a more subtle effect. Mine used about half a 50g skein of each colour. Gauge: Not critical if felting! The bigger the better! 24" head:12st to 10cm/4" (e.g., Wool of the Andes Bulky) 22"head:13st ... (e.g., Alafoss Lopi ) 20" head: 14st .. (e.g., Hjertegarn Natur Uld) Needles: 7mm 24cm circ or dpns, or size required to get gauge. Abbreviations MC - Main Colour CC - Contrasting Colour K2tog - knit 2 together. Ssk - slip 1 knitwise twice, insert left needle through front loops of slipped stitches and knit together. 3-to-1 centred decrease - slip 1, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over.

Pattern

CO 72sts loosely using Cable Cast-on method, alternating between MC and CC for each stitch. Join, being careful not to twist. Work chart 1. Work chart 2 six times around the hat, switching to dpns when necessary. Cut both yarns, leaving about 12". With a tapestry needle, thread both yarn ends through the remaining 12sts and pull tight.

Finishing

e happy with a beanie, weave in the ends, block, and wear with Pythagorean pride! Or if you are up for a bit of fun, and have like me left behind all sense of shame and fashion, not to mention any hopes of ever dating again, you can felt a fez!

How I did it:

do NOT weave in the 12” tails, but left them unsecured on the outside, pull the hat down over a 3'/-pint (2l) plastic measuring jug, ·sew the cast-on edge loosely across the top of the jug to hold the hat on, wash it with my towels in an intensive wash in my front-loading washing machine, and shape it over a suitably-sized cone of yarn and left it to dry. Trim the felted tails and finish with a lovely tassel! Sand Dance! Copyright Notice: Please do not sell copies of this pattern or make any hats for sale for profit.
