Silver Viscount Superwash 3ply Pure New Wool Tickle Free 12g of shade 190 Snowhite 12g of shade 155 Black \* Alternatively J.C. Rennie Supersoft Cashmere 2/11.3 (knits as 3ply) 87.5% lamb's wool, 12.5% cashmere Shade Minerva 007 (white) Shade Hades 009 (black) A piece of black fabric measuring 63cm (25" )x 33 (13") - the width plus 2 seam allowances x twice the length plus 2 seam allowances of the cushion pad. 30cm (12") cushion pad 30cm (12") zip Pair of 2mm (UK 14) needles.
Notes
This pattern is adaptable to your own needs. Instructions and materials are modeled on a 12in cushion using 9 sample blocks although all 16 traditional patterns are given in this pattern - the choice is yours. Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate. Read the charts from right to left on right side rows and left to right on wrong side rows. Always carry the contrast yarn under the main yarn otherwise the chequered pattern will not lookcorrect.
Tension
50sts and 50 rows to 10cm using 2mm needles over Sanquhar pattern in stst after light steaming.
Blocks - group A
Patterns with black lines (Duke, Cornet's, Rose, Rose & Trellis, Drum, Drum & Trellis, Cornet & Drum, Glendyne and un-named 1) Cast on 35sts in Black. Row 1 & 2: Stst 2 rows. Row 3: Work 33sts in pattern (sts 1 to 22, then 1 to13), joining in white as required, (1/2 repeats, ending with k2 in black as shown). Continue to follow chart until 35 rows (rows 1 to 22, then 1 to 11) have been completed since cast on (1/2 repeats of chart). Cast off in black.
Blocks - group B
Patterns with no lines (Midge & Flea, Prince of Wales, Fleur de Lys, Shepherd's Plaid, Pheasant's Eye, The Forge and un-named 2) Cast on 35sts in Black. Rows 1 & 2: Stst 2 rows. Row 3: K2 in black, work 31sts in pattern, joining in white as required, repeating pattern as necessary, k2 in black. Continue to follow chart until 33 rows have been completed since cast on. Stst 2 rows in black. Cas off in black.

Make up
Pin out each square to 7cm. Steam and allow to dry thoroughly. Fold the fabric in half to mark the midpoint, unfold and lay flat. Lay out the 9 squares to form the desired pattern on the front half (within the seam allowances) and sew in place. Fold fabric in half with right sides together, sew side seams. Turn right side out.
