Evie's Comprehensive Guide to Crafting Perfect Baby Socks: A Detailed Knitting Pattern and Tutorial

Evie's Perfect Baby Sock Recipe

Use any 4-ply sock or other yarn. I estimate you will need between 15 - 20g depending on composition. Grids have been provided on this pattern sheet to allow you to mark off rounds and rows. I don't bother swatching up for this pattern as my approach to knitting baby socks is very fluid; add or decrease rounds in the body and length of the sock according to your own judgement.Just remember torecord the number or rows when knitting your first sock so that the second will match. Using 2.75mm needles Cast on 32 stitches using a long tail cast-on. Divide over 3 DPNS as follows: 8 st on needle 1, 16 st on needle 2, 8 st on needle 3. Join stitches and knit 10 rounds in K2, P2 rib (or K1, P1 if you prefer). Knit 15 - 20 rounds in stocking stitch

Divide for heel as follows:

Starting at the beginning of the round knit across 8 stitches on needle 1, then slip the 8 stitches from needle 3 on to the other end of needle 1. Heel flap will be worked on these 16 stitches. The stitches on needle 2 will become the instep (there should now be 16 stitches on each needle).

Work heel stitches:

Work next 13 rows as follows, slipping the first stitch knitwise on knit rows, and purlwise on purl rows. Row A: sl1 purlwise, then purl to end of row Row B: (sl1, K1) to end of row.

Shape gusset:

Knit 4 stitches. Using another needle knit remaining 4 stitches. Pick up and knit 10 stitches along the first side of heel flap (needle 1). Using a new needle knit across the 16 instep stitches (needle 2). Using a third needle pick up and knit 10 stitches on other side of heel flap, then knit remaining 4 heel stitches (needle 3). Total of 46 stitches.

Decrease for the gusset:

Round A:

Needle 1: knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1 Needle 2: knit Needle 3: K1, SKP, knit to end of needle. Repeat these two rounds until 32 stitches remain Stitches should be arranged as follows: 8 st on needle 1, 16 st on needle 2, 8 st on needle 3 Continue in stocking stitch for 14 rounds (K every round). Length of sock can be adjusted here.

A3 (40)B3 (K)
A4 (38)B4 (K)
A5 (36)B5 (K)
A6 (34)B6 (K)
A7 (32)B7 (K)

Decrease for the toe:

A1 (28)B1 (K)
A2 (24)B2 (K)
A3 (20)B3 (K)
A4 (16)B4 (K)
A5 (12)B5 (K)

Repeat these two rounds until 12 stitches remain. Knit the 3 stitches on needle 1. You now have 6 stitches on each of 2 needles. Graft the toe using Kitchener stitch for neatest finish. If you are unsure how to do this there are some great tutorials on YouTube (Kitchenerstitch).
