Historical Knitting Pattern: Soldier Socks (Railway Stitch) - Updated for Modern Knitters

THE SOLDIER SOCKS Also known as Gentleman's Socks in Railway Stitch

Pattern illustration

I found this pattern for “soldier socks" while trawling through the Australian newspaper archives on ANZAC Day 2013. It was published in August of 1914 as a pattern suitable for kniting socks to send to the troops in WWl. Though not the “offcial Red Cross pattern, no doubt many of these socks were lovingly made and bundled up for shipment across the seas. I found the original a bit tricky to follow, and so I have re-written it here to \*hopefully\* make this lovely historical pattern more accessible to the not-so-experienced knitter. I believe that this pattern was originally published in the 1880s, and is also included in Nancy Bush's bookKnittingVintageSocks.

REQUIREMENTS

KNITTING THE LEG

Knit the next round in plain, kniting two stitches together at the end, and now there are 80 stitches in the round. The body of the sock is knitted in Railway Stitch, a six-round pattern repeat. A decrease is made in the calf of the sock, commencing at round 12 [chart on last page also shows first 25 rows of pattern]. Every 6th round is highlighted in the pattern to help you track your progress. The seamstitch is marked in blue.
