Materials Needed: 4 or more DPNS in US size 1, or circular needles in size 1, multiple sock weight (fingering weight) yarns, 2 stitch markers, a tapestry needle. Skills needed: Casting on, joining in the round, slipping stitches, picking up stitches, decreasing, modest stranded colourwork (2 colours in one round) and Kitchener stitch or 3 needle bind off. Abbreviations: K - Knit P - Purl K2 - Knit two Sl 1 - Slip 1 stitch purlwise SSK - Slip Slip Knit K2tog - Knit two together P2tog - Purl two together Cast on: In colour of your choosing, Cast on 64 stitches and, careful not to twist, join in the round. K2 P2 for 12 rounds or to desired length of cuff. Begin colourwork: With colour from cuff and a secondary colour, begin the chart on next page. The red will symbolize your cuff colour, the blue, your secondary colour. As working the chart, the number of rounds worked in only one colour can be more than 3 for a larger zig zag or less than 3 for a smaller zig zag. You will continue the chart, changing colours as you wish, until the leg is your desired length, minus heel.

Work chart in repeats of 4 around leg, beginning with bottom of chart. Solid rounds can be more or fewer as desired. Colours are as desired. NOTE: Heel should be worked at the end of a solid section, before beginning stranding on another colour. Heel: in same colour as cuff, and from beginning of round, you will be working half of the stitches, or 32 stitches, back and forth. The other 32 stitches will remain unworked. Row 1: Sl 1 K 31 Row 2: Sl 1 P all Row 3: \* Sl 1 K1, repeat from \* Row 4: Sl 1 P all. Row 5: Sl 2 \* K 1 Sl 1, repeat from Row 6: Sl 1 P all Repeat rows 3, 4, 5 and 6 until heel flap is 2 inches long, 2.5 to 3 if you have a higher instep. Finish after a Purl all row. Row 7: Sl 1 K18, SSK K1 turnRow 8: Sl 1 P6, P2tog P1 turn Row 9: SL 1 K7, SSK K1 turn Row 10: SL 1 P8, P2tog P1 turn Continue as Row 9 and 10, increasing 1 K or 1 P until all heel stitches are worked. Finish heel after a purl row. Work across heel, in heel colour, pick up 16 stitches down left side of heel flap. Place beginning of round marker. Slip 3, k1 and repeat until across the top of foot. Be sure to keep your K yarn loose like when stranding. Place mid round marker. Pick up and knit 16 st on right side of heel flap while working K 3 in previous stripe colour (as before heel) and slip 1 in colour used for heel. Be sure to carry any other live yarns around to the beginning of round point. Repeat K 3 Sl 1 until marker. Now you can return to zig zag pattern. One stripe under foot will be narrower.
Gusset Decrease:
Round 1: K all in pattern until mid round marker. Slip marker, K1, SSK, K all in pattern until 3 stitches before beginning of round marker, K2tog, K1. Round 2: K all. Repeat these two rounds, while working zig zags until stitch count is again 64 stitches. Foot: Continue knitting all, while working zig zag pattern until foot length is 1.5 inches short of desired lenght, then begin toe decrease in cuff and heel colour. Toe: Round 1: K1 SSK, K all to 3 stitches before mid round marker. K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1 SSK, K all to 3 stitches before beginning of round marker, K2tog, K1. Round 2: K all. Repeat these two rounds until total stitch count is 32, 18 between each marker. Kitchener stitch toe closed or use 3 needle bind off.
