Stitch pattern II | Stockinettestitch: |
Techniques | knit on RS, purl on WS |
Selvedge stitches - 2 sts at the beginning of the row and 2 sts at the end of the row: RS: at the beginning of the row, slip the first stitch knit-wise with yarn in back, knit the next stitch, at the end of the row, knit the next-to-last stitch and purl the last stitch. WS: at the beginning of the row, slip the first stitch knit-wise with yarn in back, purl the next stitch, at the end of the row, purl the last two stitches |
!Please note! Watch the size of your selvedge stitches. If it should be necessary to make them smaller, at the beginning of the row, after slipping one stitch, pull the working yarn to the back gently. If you need to make them larger, pull the stitch a littlelonger. After blocking, the chained edge will curl to the wrong side of the fabric.
Increases:
M1R - make 1 right
Wind the yarn around the needle twisted as shown in Photo 1 - the yarn exits behind the loop. In the following row, work this new stitch as it appears.

Photo 1
M1L - make 1 left
Wind the yarn around the needle twisted as shown in Photo 2 - the yarn exits in front of the loop. In the following row, work this new stitch as it appears.

Abbreviations
k2tog = knit 2 sts together, skp = slip 1 st knit-wise, knit next st, pass slipped st over st(s) = stitch(es), st patt = stitch pattern, st st = stockinette stitch selv st= selvedge stitch, k = knit, p = purl, WS = wrong side, RS = right side Schematic

Step 1. Center Part.
Using 3 mm [US212] needles and yarn #1, cast on 5 sts.
Narrow stripes.
Rows 1 (Rs) - 2 (= 2 rows total): work with yarn #1 in garter stitch, work (2) selvedge sts at the edges, knit the center stitch and mark it with a stitch marker for orientation, in RS rows, before the center stitch: M1R, after the center stitch, M1L = 7 sts total. Rows 3 - 4 (= 2 rows total): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, work (2) selvedge sts at the edges, in RS rows, before the center stitch: M1R, after the center stitch, M1L = 9 sts total. Repeat Rows 1 - 4 (= 4 rows total) another 22 times = 92 rows total, 97 sts total. Wide stripes. Rows 93 - 96 (= 4 rows total): work with yarn #1 in garter stitch, selv sts at the edges, work the center stitch in stockinette st, in every RS row, before the center stitch: M1R, after the center stitch, M1L = 101 sts total. To avoid unsightly long floats of the unused yarn carried along at the edge, at the beginning of every RS row, twist yarn #1 and yarn #2 around each other. Rows 97 - 100 (= 4 rows total): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, selv sts at the edges, in every RS row, before the center stitch: M1R, after the center stitch, M1L = 105 sts total. To avoid unsightly long floats of the unused yarn carried along at the edge, at the beginning of every RS row, twist yarn #1 and yarn #2 around each other. Repeat Rows 93 - 100 (= 8 rows total) another 10 times = 180 rows total, 185 sts total. Now, repeat Rows 93 - 96 (= 4 rows total) once more = 184 rows total, 189 sts total.
Dividing work in the center.
Row 185 (Rs): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st up to the center stitch(= 94 sts ), at the beginning of the row, work selv sts. Knit the center stitch, but don't let it slip off of the left needle (= 95 sts). Transfer the sts to the left of the center stitch and the center stitch itself (95 sts, too) to a spare circular or a stitch holder.
From here on, the left and right half of the shawl are worked separately
Row numbers are the same for the left and right half of the shawl. For better orientation, numbers for the left and right half of the shawl are preceded by the appropriate letter: L - for the left corner, R - for the right corner. Work the selv sts of the upper edge of the shawl loosely.
Step 2. Right corner.
Worked over the sts to the right of the center st only (=95 sts). Row R186 (WS): working with yarn #2, purl all sts, work selv sts at the edges. Rows R187 - R188 (= 2 rows total): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, selv sts at the edges, in RS rows, at the left edge (at the end of the row), decrease by one st: before the selv sts, k2tog = 94 sts total. Rows R189 - R192 (= 4 rows total): work with yarn #1 in garter stitch, selv sts at the edges, in every RS row, at the left edge (at the end of the row), decrease by one st: before the selv sts, k2tog = 92 sts total. To avoid unsightly long floats of the unused yarn carried along at the edge, at the beginning of every RS row, twist yarn #1 and yarn #2 around each other. Rows R193 - R196 (= 4 rows total): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, selv sts at the edges, in every RS row, at the left edge (at the end of the row), decrease by one st: before the selv sts, k2tog = 90 sts total. To avoid unsightly long floats of the unused yarn carried along at the edge, at the beginning of every RS row, twist yarn #1 and yarn #2 around each other. Rows R189 - R196 (= 8 rows total) another 11 times = 284 rows total, 46 sts total
Narrow stripes.
Rows R285 - R286 (= 2 rows total): work with yarn #1 in garter stitch, selv sts at the edges, in RS rows, at the left edge (at the end of the row), decrease by one st: before the selv sts, k2tog = 45 sts total. Rows R287 - R288 (= 2 rows total): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, selv sts at the edges, in RS rows, at the left edge (at the end of the row), decrease by one st: before the selv sts, k2tog = 44 sts total. Repeat Rows R285 - R288 (= 4 rows total) until only 3 sts are left. Knit together the remaining 3 sts as k3tog and secure the end of yarn.
Step 3. Left corner.
Unhold the formerly held 95 sts. Rows L185 (Rs) - L186: work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, work selv sts at the edges.
Narrow stripes.
Rows L187 - L188 (= 2 rows total): work with yarn #1 in garter stitch, selv sts at the edges, in RS rows, along the right edge, (at the beginning of the row), decrease by one st: after the selv sts, skp = 94 ststotal. Rows L189 - L190 (= 2 rows total): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, selv sts at the edges, in RS rows, along the right edge, (at the beginning of the row), decrease by one st: after the selv sts, skp = 93 ststotal. :peat Rows L187 - L190 (= 4 rows total) another 21 times = 274 rows, 51 sts total
Wide stripes.
Rows L275 - L278 (= 4 rows total): work with yarn #1 in garter stitch, selv sts at the edges, in every RS row, along the right edge, (at the beginning of the row), decrease by one st: after the selv sts, skp = 49 sts total. To avoid unsightly long floats of the unused yarn carried along at the edge, at the beginning of every RS row, twist yarn #1 and yarn #2 around each other. Rows L279 - L282 (= 4 rows total): work with yarn #2 in stockinette st, selv sts at the edges, in every RS row, along the right edge, (at the beginning of the row), decrease by one st: after the selv sts, skp = 47 sts total. To avoid unsightly long floats of the unused yarn carried along at the edge, at the beginning of every RS row, twist yarn #1 and yarn #2 around each other. Repeat Rows L275 - L282 (= 8 rows total) until only 3 sts are left. Knit together the remaining 3 sts as k3tog and secure the end of yarn. Hide all ends and wet block garment.
