Rambling Rows Scarf
A Simple Knits design

An easy garter scarf knit with short rows using worsted weight yarn and size 9 knitting needles. The curves are formed using no-wrap short rows. It really shows off the long color runs in yarns such as Lion Brand Amazing (top) and Trendsetter Tonalita (bottom). This small scarf hugs the neck to keep away the drafts. Fasten it around your neck and secure it with a pretty stick pin. Or knit more short rows to make it longer. The pattern is written for the shorter scarf (bottom photo) that uses 100 yards. The longer scarf (upper photo) used 150 yards of yarn and was lengthened by working a few more repeats. You could make this scarf with any weight of yarn by changing the needle size to suit the yarn. For a wider scarf using the same weight yarn, see the note at the end of the pattern.

Want a wider scarf?
The simplest way to make the scarf wider is to use thicker yarn and larger size needles. Check the yarn label to see what size is recommended for the yarn you chose. Yardage will vary depending on how long you make your scarf. If you want to use the same weight of yarn as the pattern (or something thinner), you will need to do a little math before you can begin. First, knit a swatch and measure your swatch to determine your stitch gauge. Take the number of stitches in 1 inch and multiply it by the width you want your scarf to be in inches. This will give you the number of stitches you will need to cast on for your scarf For example: 4 sts x 6" wide = 24 sts Below is how to adapt the pattern to work with any stitch count to achieve the width of scarf you desire. With your chosen yarn and needles: cO 24 sts (or your chosen stitch count). Knit 1 row. Wedge A: (1 more st is left unworked every row) Knit until only 2 sts are unworked, turn, slip the 1st st, knit back (to beginning of row). Repeat the row instructions above, leaving 1 more st unworked on each row until you only knit 3 sts on the last row. Then knit all the sts on your needles. Go to Wedge B. Wedge B: (2 more sts are left unworked every row) Knit until only 2 sts are unworked, turn, slip 1"t st, knit back. Repeat the row instructions above, leaving 2 more sts unworked on each row until you only knit 4 sts on the last row. Then knit all the sts on your needles. Repeat Wedges A & B as many times as you wish. To complete the scarf, knit Wedge A only. Bind off as you knit all the sts on your needles.
