Driftwood and Kelp Plaid Cowl Knitting Pattern with Float Stitch Rib and Provisional Cast On Tutorial

Description: This cowl is worked flat and then joined to form a circle. Begin with either a provisional cast on or sew a seam at the end.

Size: 8" x 28" Materials: US size 7 needles or size to obtain gauge Tapestry needle Fibre Company Acadia yarn, 1 skein each of driftwood (color A) and kelp (color B) (60% merino wool, 20% baby alpaca + 20% silk ,145 yds /50 gram skein) Optional for Provisional Cast on: Crochet hook ( size H or I) and small amount smooth waste yarr. k- knit wyib- with yarn in back sl- slip (note: slip all stitches purlwise while working this pattern) wyif- with yarn in front

Directions:

Section 1: Provisional Cast on beginning: Using crochet hook and waste yarn, make a chain of 42 stitches. Cut yarn and pull through last stitch in chain to secure. Using Color A and your knitting needles, pick up a total of 38 stitches along the length of the crochet chain. Alternative Beginning if you are going to seam the cowl: Cast on 38 stitches in color A using either a long tail or backwards loop. The first stitch pattern used is called the float stitch rib. It consists of the following two rows: Row 1: (RS) \*K2, wyif sl2 rep from \*, end k2. Row 2: Purl. Repeat these two rows until section measures 6", ending after a wrong side row. (RS) Join Color B. Knit 1 row. Continuing with Color B, work the following 3 rows: (note: you do not have to cut color A. Twist it at the edge on rs rows to keep a neat appearance.) Row 1: (WS) P1, K1 across row. Row 2: (RS) K1, P1. Row 3: (WS) P1, K1. Begin Plaid pattern. Driftwood (color A), Kelp (color B) Row 1(RS) : With A, k1, \*sl1wyib, k2, sl1wyib, k4; repeat from \* 5 times ending last repeat k1. 1, k1, \*sl1wyif,p2,sl1wyif, p4; repeat from \* ending last repeat k Row 3: With B, knit. Row 4: With B, k1, \*k1 wrapping twice, k2,k1 wrapping twice, k4; repeat from \*, end last repeat k1. Row 5: With A, repeat row 1, dropping extra wraps off needles when slipping stitches. Rows 6, 8 and 10: Repeat Row 2. Rows 7 and 9: Repeat Row 1. Rows 11 and 12: With B, knit. Repeat rows 1-12 (5) times. Cut color A leaving a 6" tail. Work the following rows in color B two times: Row 1 (RS): k1, p1. Row 2: p1,kl. The right side of the piece should be facing you. Continuing with color B, work the floating rib pattern for 6". Row 1: (RS) \*K2, wyif sl2 rep from \*, end k2. Row 2: Purl. End after working a ws row. Knit 1 row in Color B. Join color A. Continuing with Color A, work the following 3 rows: (note: you do not have to cut color B. Twist it at the edge on rs rows to keep a neat appearance ). Row 1: (WS) P1, K1 across row. Row 2: (RS) K1, P1. Row 3: (WS) P1, K1. Second plaid section: Driftwood (color A), Kelp (color B) Row 1(RS): With B, k1, \*sllwyib, k2, sllwyib, k4; repeat from \* 5 times ending last repeat k1. Row 2: With B, k1, \*sl1wyif,p2,sl1wyif, p4; repeat from \* ending last repeat k1. Row 3: With A, knit. Row 4: With A, k1, \*k1 wrapping twice, k2,k1 wrapping twice, k4; repeat from \*, end last repeat k1. Row 5: With B, repeat row 1, dropping extra wraps of needles when slipping stitches. Rows 6, 8 and 10: Repeat Row 2. Rows 7 and 9: Repeat Row 1. Rows 11 and 12: With A, knit. Repeat rows 1-12 (5) times. Cut color B leaving a 6" tail. Using Color A work the following rows 2 times: Row 1 (RS): k1, p1. Row 2: pl, kl. Finishing: Using an extra needle carefully remove provisional cast on and place live stitches on needle. With right sides facing seam cowl using either a Kitchener stitch or three needle bind off. \*Note: If provisional cast on was not used, cast off stitches and sew seam. Weave in ends with tapestry needle. Steam with iron to block.
