Windmill Bay: A Knitted Stole Pattern with Lace, Cables, and a Heartwarming Story

Windmill Bay by Sashka Macievich

Pattern illustration

Windmill Bay is a stole knit from end to end with a lacy section nestled between ribbed and cabled sections. 1 designed this as a go to stole for around the campfire or snuggling on the sofa while watching a favourite movie. It would make a great gift for a faraway friend (or a close one) when an in person hug is just not possible. The lace and cable are both easy enough for advanced beginner knitters. The pattern includes both written and charted instructions and the story of Windmill Bay is included on the last page. Sashka

A bit about Sashka

Sashka lives with her husband in a small community in Northern British Columbia. Creating all her life and knitting since a child she covets all things fibery. When not knitting, spinning, dyeing, or designing she dabbles in sleeping, eating, and working to pay the bills. Windmill Bay - Fact or Fiction?

Not far away (but far enough) there is a place. You know the place, the one in your mind that you go to when need a place to go. Yours may have name. Or no name at all. It may a real. Or not. This is the story of my place - I'll call it Windmill Bay. A while ago I was hugely stressed, so I tried various stress reducing activities including relaxation classes. When the voice on the tape (or the instructor, in the fancy expensive classes) directed us to our happy places I was lost. 1 struggled to come up with something that would make me happy. I conjured warm beaches, swaying palms, majestic snow-capped mountains. At the end of class I was exhausted! Surely there was a happy place for me! Determined to get the most effect out of class I made a list. My happy place must be private and quiet. It would have water, mountains, driftwood and a pebbly beach. Now with the 'picture' in my mind's eye I filled in the sounds. The tide lapping on the beach, the wind rustling the leaves, loons calling to each other at dawn. Relaxation class was no longer stressful, it was actually relaxing. Eventually, I stopped going to relaxation class, I wandered down the various paths of my life and scampered back up some of them. I found more real and not real happy (and some not so happy) places; but those are other stories. Not so many years ago my husband took me for a drive not far away. To my place. As soon as I stepped out of the truck I felt it, then I saw it,then I knew. My place is Windmill Bay. You can find me there most weekends in the summer. Our trailer parked in among the poplars. I'll be sitting on a log drifted up on the beach or by the fire. My new stole on my shoulders. Cause it sure is windy there. Come on by for a coffee or a glass of wine. It's not on any way, and it's not easy to find. Is it real? I guess that's
