Professor's Scarf

Ok so, there is a professor where I work who wears the saddest excuse for a scarf that I've ever seen. I decided to knit a scarf for him for Christmas last year. He's not a fussy guy, so cables and such just weren't an option!I wanted something simple, yet substantial. I like the look of ribbing, but I find that the long sides of a ribbed scarf curl backwards too much. So I devised this unbelievably simple “fake" $3\times3$ ribing pattern. I knit this scarf lengthwise rather than back & forth. Overall, the scarf is about 52 inches long and about 7 inches wide. I worked in a purl row in the middle of the garter rows to help prevent curling. This put a knit channel on the WS, which broke up the fabric of the knitting on the back. It did help prevent curling! So much so, that I didn't even need to block it. Hallelujah! Gauge really isn't important. I imagine you could use just about any weight yarn and end up with a nice result. Aran weight yarn (about 220 yards for the $52^{\ast}$ version). CO 200 stitches (or more if you want a longer scarf) on size 9 needles. row 1: Knit row 2: Knit row 3: Knit row 4: Purl row 5: Purl row 6: Knit row 7: Purl
row 8: Knit
Repeat these 8 rows until desired width of scarf. End with row 4. Bind off. Professor'sScarf $\circledcirc$ 2008 Gina Waters. All Rights Reserved. http://mirthful-menagerie.blogspot.com For private, non-commercial use only. Pattern may be copied and distributed for free.
