"not in vain do we watch the setting and rising of the stars" maria mitchell, born in 1818, was the first american woman to work as a professional astronomer. In 1847, using a telescope, she discovered a cometwhichbecameknown as miss mitchell's comet. she was the first person to hold thepost of professor of astronomy at vassarcollegeandwasdirectorofthe observatory there. after discovering the difference in pay between herself and that of many young males at the college sheinsisted on a raise and she got it!

Size: adult Main color (mc): handspun corriadale Contrasting color (cc): rowan purelife, bluefaced leister needles: one set of size us 6 (4mm) double point needles.

notes: it is very important to float your yarn in the back very loosely. if you are having a hard time with this please don't hesitate to bump your needles up to size us 7's for the tail chart. i found it easier to omit the cable needle completely, it was a bit cumbersome working both strands and a cable needle at the same time. for simply dropped the knit st off instead of slipping it on the cable needle, then purl one st, then pick up the dropped st and knit it. i found that I didn't have any problem with the dropped stitch running. for L insert right hand needle into the second st (the knit st) and knit it but don't drop it off of the left had needle, bring cc to front and purl the next st, then drop both sts off the left had needle. this hat absolutely needs to be blocked, or at least the crown does. Place over a head sized bowl and soak the top. stretch over the bowl until smooth and flat. allow to dry. Hat can also be blocked directly on your head, If you don't mind getting a little wet! glossary: st-stitch st st-stockinette stitch k-knit p-purl k2tog- knit 2 together p2tog-purl 2 together m1- make 1 pw-purl wise cn- cable needle directions: cast on 90 sts with mc, and being careful not to twist, connect and begin working in the round. purl one round. -round 2: \*p9, m1 pw from \* to end. 9 times. (99 sts) -round 3: begin with set up round of tail chart and being careful to float your yarn in back VERY loosely work rounds 1-12 of tail chart. note that the beginning of round shifts 1 st to the left each time around on slant rounds 1, and then 1 st to the right on slant rounds 2. -round 15: break off cc leaving a long tail to weave in later, \*k9, k2tog from \* to end, 9 times (90 sts) -round 16 & 17: purl. work in st st for 5 inches. or however long you want. shape cap: work rounds 1-16 of cap star chart. break yarn, weave through remaining st and cinch tight.
