Comprehensive Guide to Knitting a Shawl Collar Cardigan, Hat, Cap, Skinny Jeans, Satchel, and Scarf

Materials :- 100 gms UK Double knit yarn for cardigans and hats, light grey or blue ,50gms charcoal grey for trousers and bag, A small amount of yellow contrast and approx. 20 grams red contrast. I used Stylecraft Special DoubleKnit Yarn 2 x size 3.25mm needles and 2 x size 4mm needles. 3 buttons for cardi, and 1 button for the satchel, shirring elastic for the trousers. Gauge 6sts and 7.5 rows = 1 sq inch of stocking stitch using 3.25mm needles

Shawl Collar Cardigan.

Pocket linings, make 2 the same.

Using size 3.25mm needles and UK Double Knit yarn, cast on 10sts. Work 8 rows in stocking stitch, break the yarn and leave each set of 10sts on a pin till later.

Cardigan main piece, worked all in one to armholes

Using size 3.25mm needles and Light Grey UK Double Knit yarn cast on 74sts and commence rib as follows. Row 1. \* K2 ,p2, rep from \* to last 2sts , k2. Row 2. \* P2, K2, rep from \* to last 2sts,P2. Repeat the last 2 rows twice more. = 6rows. Now commence the main section of the body Rows 1 through 8 , starting with a knit row, work 8 rows in stocking stitch. Row 9. Pocket placement K4, \*slip the next 10 stitches on to a pin till later, in their place, knit the 10sts of one of the pocket linings which were left on a pin earlier,\* knit till the last 14 sts, and repeat from \* to \* once, then knit the last 4sts. Rows 10 through 26, starting with a purl row, work in stocking stitch. Work now measures 4 inches

Divide for armholes

Row 27. Also the start of the v-neck shaping, K2tog, K14, cast off 3sts, k36 incl stitch left after cast off, cast off 3sts, k14 incl stitch left after cast off, k2tog.Place a marker at either end of this row to show where the front neck shaping starts. Now with the wrong side facing work on the first set of 15sts for the left front as follows Row 28. P13, p2tog. =14sts Row 29. K2tog, k12. =13sts Row 30. P11, p2tog. =12sts Row 31. Knit to last 2sts, k2tog (front edge) = 11sts Rows 32 through 46, work in stocking stitch , working front neck decreases , on rows 35, 39, and 43 as we did in row 31. =8sts Break yarn and put these 8sts to the far end of the needle for the left front shoulder.

Now with the wrong side facing, rejoin the yarn to the centre 36sts for the back Work 3 rows stocking st decreasing 1 stitch at each end of every row. =30sts (rows 28-30) Rows 31 through 47, work straight in stocking stitch. Now with the right sides together do a 3needle bind off with the 1"t 8 stitches and the 8stitches left at the far end of the needle for the left front shoulder . Break yarn after the bind off and put the remaining 22 back neck sts on a pin till later. Now with the wrong side facing rejoin the yarn to the remaining 15sts for the right fron Row 28. P2tog, purl to end .=14sts Row 29. Knit to the last 2sts, k2tog.=13sts Row 30. P2tog, purl to end.=12sts Row 31. K2tog (front edge), knit to end= 11sts Rows 32 through 47, work in stocking stitch but working front neck decreases on rows 35, 39, and 43 as we did in row31. =8sts Now with the right sides together do a 3needle bind off with these 8 stitches and the first 8 of the 22 stitches left on the pin for the back, transfer the remaining 14sts on to the other needle and keep at the far end till later for the back neck.

Pocket Tops, both the same.

Using size 3.25mm needles work across the 10sts left on the pin for the pocket top. Row 1. \*K2, p2, repeat from \* to last 2sts, k2. Row 2. \*p2, k2, repeat from \* to last 2sts, p2. Cast off in K2,P2 rib. Slip stitch the row ends to the cardigan, then slip stitch the pocket in place on the wrong side.

Sleeves, work 2 the same

Using size 3.25mm needles ,cast on 26sts and work 6 rows in K2, P2 rib. Now work 26 rows in stocking stitch , increasing one stitch at both ends of rows 11,15,19 and 23. =34stsWork now measures 4 inches Next commence the armhole shaping by decreasing 1 stitch at each end of the next 4rows. =26sts Cast off the remaining 26sts. sides facing, set in the sleeves matching the armhole shaping and join the sleeve seams .

Front Border Band and Shawl Collar

\*\*With the right ide facing and commencing at the bottom of the righ front,pick up and knit 28sts up to the PLACED MARKER,now pick up 22sts up the right front slope, now knit 6 across the back neck sts from the pin,k2tog,k6 . Now knit 22sts down the left front slope to the PLACED MARKER and finally pick up and knit 28sts down the left front. = 113sts\*\*\*

Rib 98, turn Row 4. Slip 1, Rib 69, turn. Row 5. Slip 1, Rib 66, turn. Row 6. Slip 1, Rib 63, turn. Work a further 8 rows as set, working 3sts less in each row till row 14 has been worked (sl1, rib 39,turn). Row 15. Slip 1, rib to end. Row 16. Boy's Buttonhole Row. Rib 98sts,(YRN, p2tog,rib 10) twice,YRN, p2tog,rib 2. Row 16. Girl's Buttonhole Row. Rib 2sts,(YRN, p2tog,rib 10) twice,YRN, p2tog,rib to en Row 17. (P2, K2,) to last 2sts, P2 Row 18. Rib 28, (K1,M1, K1, P2,) 17 times, K1, M1, K1, rib to end. Cast off in 2 x 2 Rib or 2 x 3 rib where appropriate.

Pull on Hat

Using size 3.25mm needles and UK Double Knit yarn, cast on 68sts. Row 1. \* p2, K2, repeat from \* to the end. Rows 2 through 30 , work as row 1. Crown shaping. Row 1. \* P2tog, K2, repeat from \* to end. =51sts Row 2. \* P2, K1, repeat from \* to end. Row 3. \* P1, K2tog, repeat from \* to end. =34sts Row 4. \* P1, K1, repeat from \* to end. Row 5. \* K2tog, repeat from \* to end. =17sts Row 6. \* P2tog, repeat from \* to last stitch, p1. =9sts Break yarn leaving a long tail, thread this through the 9 sts ,draw up and secure tightly and continue to oversew the back seam.

Page 4 V-Necked Cardigan

Work the cardigan exactly the same as the shawl collar cardigan apart from the front bands and the pockets. Also I substituted the first 6 stocking stitch rows of the bottom of the cardigan and the sleeves with 2 rows red, 2 rows yellow and 2 rows red again, to form the stripes.

V-Neck Front Bands

With the right side facing and commencing at the bottom of the right front, pick up and knit 28sts up to the PLACED MARKER,now pick up 22sts up the right front slope, now knit 14 across the back neck sts from the pin,then knit 22sts down the left front slope to the PLACED MARKER and finally pick up and knit 28sts down the left front. = 114sts Rows 1, 3 & 5. \*(P2, K2) repeat from \* to last 2 sts, P2 Row 2. \*(K2, P2) repeat from \* to last 2 sts,K2 Row 4. Boy's Buttonhole Row. Rib 86sts,(YRN, p2tog,rib 10) twice,YRN, p2tog,rib 2. Row 4. Girl's Buttonhole Row. Rib 2sts,(YRN, p2tog,rib 10) twice,YRN, p2tog,rib to end Row 6. Rib 40, (K1,M1,K1,P2) 8 times, Rib to end. Cast off in 2 x 2 rib or 2 x 3 rib where appropriate. Attach 3 buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Cap

Using the main ball of light Grey yarn and size 3.25mm needles. Cast on 24sts Row 1. K23 turn Row 2. Slip 1, p20, wrap and turn. Row 3. Slip 1, k17, wrap and turn. Row 4. Slip 1, p14, wrap and turn. Row 5. Slip 1, k11, wrap and turn. Row 6. Slip1, p8, wrap and turn. Row 7. Slip 1, knit to end. Row 8. Knit to end ( this forms the garter stitch peak) Row 9. K17 ,wrap and turn Row 10. Slip 1, p8, wrap and turn. Row 11. Slip 1, k11, wrap and turn. Row 12. Slip 1, p14 , wrap and turn. Row 13. Slip 1, k17, wrap and turn Row 14. Slip 1, p20, wrap and turn Row 15. Slip 1. Knit to end Row 16. Purl to end.

Row 17. Cast on 22sts at the beginning of the next row and work all across in K2, P2, Rib = 46sts Row 18. Cast on 22sts at the beginning of the next row and work all across in K2, P2, Rib = 68sts Rows 19 and 20, work in 2 x 2 rib . Now commence the main part. Rows 1 and 2, knit in red. Rows 3 and 4, knit in yellow. Rows 5 and 6, knit in red. Break off the red and yellow and continue in light grey only Rows 7 through 20, starting with a knit row, work in stocking stitch . Shape the crown. Row 21. \*(K2tog, K2,) repeat from \* to end of row. =51sts. Row 22. Purl. Row 23. \*(K2tog, K1,) repea tfrom \* to end of row. =34sts. Row 24.Purl. Row 25. \*(K2tog, ) repeat from \* to end of row. =17sts. Row26.Purl. Row 27. K1, \*(K2tog, ) repeat from \* to end of row. =9sts. Break off the yarn and thread through the 9sts ,pull up tightly and with right sides together oversew the back seam. Now Fold the peak under and in half and slip stitch the cast on edge to the row before the rib starts. Skinny Jeans . Care, My London Guy's inside leg is shorter by 1 inch than American Girl For both legs work as follows:- Using size 3.25mm needles and Charcoal Grey UK double knit yarn cast on 31sts Knit 1 row. For My London Guy starting with a knit row work 40 rows in stocking stitch increasing 1"t at each endof rows 19,23,27, 31, 35, & 39. = 43STS Work now measures 5 inches

For American Girl Doll or Gotz Hannah starting with a knit row work 48 rows in stocking stitch increasing 1st at each end of rows 27,31, 35,39,43,& 47.= 43STS Work now measures 6 inches Now continue both sizes as follows, commence the Crotch shaping by decreasing 1't at each end of thenext5rows.=33sTs )rk 15 rows stocking stitch for the left leg OR work 16 rows stocking stitch for the right I

Next 2 rows. Work 18sts stocking st, turn. Slip 1 work to end. Next 2 rows. Work 9sts stocking st, turn. Slip 1 work to end. Work 4 rows single rib across all the stitches for the waistband then cast off ribwise. To Make up With right sides together, Sew the back and front seams from waistband to crotch then sew the 2 leg seams. On the wrong side, thread shiring elastic through the knit stitches on the last row of the waistband ribbing.

Satchel

ze 3.25mm needles and Charcoal Grey .Cast on 20sts and Knit 1 row as a foundation row Row 1. Knit Row 2. K2, Purl to last 2 sts, K2 Row 3. Buttonhole row. K9, YFWD, k2tog, k9. Rows 4 through 11, work as rows 2 and 1 Row 12. Purl . Rows 13 through 15 Knit . Row 16. Purl. Rows 17 through 56 ,work as rows 13 through 16 Now knit 3 rows. Cast off knitwise. Fold the ridged section in half with right sides together and stitch the row ends together. Turn right sides out and flap over the first 12 rows . Sew on a button to close. Make a crochet chain to the required length for the strap and stitch inside the top corners of the bag.

Scarf

Using size 4mm needles and red double knit yarn, cast on 10sts. Rows 1 through 6, knit in red. Now join in the yellow yarn. Rows 7 through 16, work in garter stitch, 2 rows yellow, 2 rows red, 2 rows yellow, 2 rows red and 2 rows yellow. Now break off the yellow yarn. Rows 17 through 148, knit in red. Work now measures 14.25 inches. Now join in the yellow again. Rows 149 through 158 work as rows 7 through 16. Break off yellow and knit 6 rows red .Cast off and sew in the ends.
