BRELLA'S CORALINE MITTENS
Coraline, the 2009 animated film, was based on an awardwinning children's novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman. In this wonderful blend of horror and fantasy, young Coraline Jones has to outsmart a spidery Other Mother in order to free her parents and the souls of captured children. Her friend the black cat helps her battle long-tailed jumping mice in order to win the button-ended key that will get them back home. The cat, mouse and key make great visual statements in knitting, and look good even if you don't recognize the movie reference. Use a combination of intarsia and stranded knitting for most convenience. These charts are meant to be used in conjunction with my Generic Mittens Knit Flat pattern to create a pair of Coraline mittens. It assumes that the 19 sts across each chart are centred within the width of each mitten. The mittens shown involved a circumference of 50 sts, and the charts were started on the second row after the ribbing. Decreases for the tip were started on row 50. At my gauge of 19 sts $=26$ rows $=3"$ ,this created mittens that were \~8" in circumference and ${\sim}7"$ long from the border of the ribbing to mitten tip. It's up to you how wide you want yours to be. Also, use your row gauge and the length of the recipient's hand to figure out when you should starting working the charts in the body of the mittens, when you should start the decreases, and how long to continue them before closing up your mittens. Obviously, you can adapt these charts to other objects as well. Scarves, pullovers, hats, bags... Whatever the case, please don't charge anyone money for these charts ( whatever you might make out of them. The rights to these images belong to their creators, and should not be used for personal profit.
