Spiral Gift Bag

This pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
Description
This pattern uses three yarns in typical Halloween colours but can easily be changed for a diferent theme - for instance, red green and white for Christmas or three shades of red/pink for Valentine's Day. Green, red or white eyelash yarn would go well with those. Skill level - advanced beginner
Supplies
5mm crochet hook. Suggested yarn - Sirdar Funky Fox black eyelash yarn (less than one 50g ball for three rounds), Caron Simply Soft in three contrasting colours, e.g. “Neon Orange", "Black" and “lris". Less than a quarter of a skein in each colour will be needed. A pair of scissors, a yarn needle and three stitch markers. Optional - an icord maker for the cord, see end of pattern for alternative ways of making a cord.
Gauge
As this pattern is for a bag, getting gauge right isn't too important (unlike a hat which has to fit well). Suggested stitches for swatch - dc stitches. 4 rows in 2 inches down 10 stitches in 2 inches across The diameter of first 8 rounds - approx. 7 to 8 inches
Abbreviations
sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet hdc = half double crochet dc = double crochet
Directions
The instructions refer to "color A", "color B" and “color C". Assign the black to “color A". Where the instructions say "remove hook" - either attach a stitch marker into the loop or enlarge the loop enough so the stitch doesn't undo itself when working on the other colors. le first two or three rounds will be a little awkward working with three yarns. Using color A: chain 4 then slipstitch into the first chain making a circle. Hide all the loose ends in the stitches as you work around the circle in round one or sew in later and thread them around the inside of the stitches a few times.

Cord or "Tie"
The cord featured in the picture on page one is approximately 32 inches long and was made using a mechanical icord maker (my brand is the “Embellish Knit", other brands are available). You could also make one from crocheting chain stitches or plaiting using three or more strands of yarn. There are also other non-mechanical gadgets which will produce something similar to the icord maker, sometimes called a “French Knitting Machine". When you have created your cord, thread it between the stitches below the black single crochet rows at the top. The gap between stitches in the pictured bag is three (see picture below) but you can do this differently. Tie a bow at the front.
