To Button or Not...Cowl
Finished size: 18" d x 8" tall (unstretched) Materials: Worsted weight (Cascade 220 Superwash), 5 buttons. Equipment: Size 8 ,16" circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge), and darning needle Gauge: 5 sts/ inch CO 56 (l prefer cable cast on because of its stretchiness...is that a word?) Row 1: (RS) K2, \* p4, k2\* rep from \* Row 2: (WS) P2, \* k4, p2\* rep from Repeat these two rows until ribbing is 1 1/2" from CO. Begin open chain ribbing pattern (see side bar), work for 14". (Ilf you like a slouchier cowl added additional inches here) Return to, Row 1: (WS) K2, \* p4, k2\* rep from \* Row 2: (RS) P2, \* k4, p2\* rep from \* Buttonhole row: (RS) P2, \*k1, k2tog, yo, kl, p2, k4, p2\* to end of row. 5 buttonholes made! Continue with, Row 1: (RS) K2,\* p4, k2\* rep from \* Row 2: (WS) P2,\* k4, p2\* rep from \* Repeat these two rows until ribbing is 1 1/2" from end of open chain ribbing pattern. BO loosely and... ENJOY!

Pattern row 1: (WS) K2,\*p4, k2; rep from\* to end Pattern row 2: (RS) P2,\* k2tog, [yo] twice, sll, kl, psso, p2; rep from \* to end Pattern row 3: (WS) K2, \* p1, purl into front of 1st yo, purl into back of 2nd yo, pl, k2; rep from\* to end. Pattern row 4: (RS) P2,\* yon, sll, k1, psso, k2tog, yfrn, p2; rep from \* to end.
