Godchen Fingerless Mitts: A Palatine Word Pattern for a Special Godmother's Birthday Gift

Godchen is a palatine word for godmother. This pattern came about when my mother's now 94-years-old godchen requested some gauntlets for her birthday.

Materials

Yarn 2 balls Lang Yarns Merino 150 (100% wool, 150m (165yd) per 50g ball) shown in color 197.0162 yarn is held double throughout Needles US #4/3.5 mm needles for working in the round (DPNs, 1 long circular or 2 short circulars), or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge

23 sts and 34 rows = 4 inches/10cm in stockinette stitch

Sizes and Fit

Size given: Adult, one size will fit most, total length 28cm. Sizeiseasily adjustable by adding or substracting sts from the stockinette part as needed. Stretchy fit.

Instructions

When working with Merino 150, yarn is held double throughout. CO 48 sts, join for working in the round. Set up pattern as follows: knit 38, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2. Work in established pattern for 9 more rds. Decrease round: k1, k2tog, k to 3 sts before first purl st, ssk, k1, continue to end. (= 46 sts) Work 7 rds in established pattern. Work one decrease round. (= 44 sts) Work 7 rds in established pattern. Work one decrease round.(= 42 sts) Work 7 rds in established pattern. Work one decrease round. (= 40 sts) Continue working over 40 sts till mitt measures 19cm/7.5in. Divide for thumb openings: Left mitt: knit 3 sts, slip one st with yarn in front, turn. Right mitt: knit to 5 sts before first purl st, slip one st with yarn in front, turn. Work back and forth over all sts, always slipping last st with yarn in front and kntting first st tbl. After 4.5 cm/ 134 in, start working in the round again.

Work 4cm/112 in in the round, bind off.

Tip: bind-off

For a stretchy bind-off, knit 2, transfer those 2 sts back to left needle and knit them together through the back loop. Knit one, transfer 2 sts back to left needle, and knit them together through the back loop, etc.
