Ten Ten Cowl
Designed by Claudia Mcclean Design challenge: an accessory uses almost all of 8 skeins of various shades of yarn. Only 6 inches remained when the prototype was completed—-yikes, perbaps cutting it a little TOO close! My appreciation to everyone who was a part of our mystery knit along wbere the cowl was unveiled. It starts simply, then gets progressively more... interesting! Fun to knit and fun to wear, ideal in my book. You might even say it's addictive!

Notes
With the first 3 yarn colorways you will be knitting a long skinny piece fat in garter stitch. This strip will be joined into a circle and then the edges will be picked up and worked in the round. Options are presented for working rufles fat or in the round (requires several circular needles for large circumferences).
Instructions
YARN 1
Using straight needles and crochet provisional cast-on (or, use regular caston and pick up stitches when directed to undo provisional cast-on), cast on 32 stitches. Row 1: K31, p1. Row 2: Sl 1 knitwise, k30, p1. Repeat row 2 for a total of 244 rows (122 garter stitch ridges). All RIghts Reserved. Copyright BLue Chicken LLC 2012 www.claudiaco.com

YARN 2
Cut Yarn 1, join Yarn 2. Work row 2 as est for 236 rows (118 garter stitch ridges).
TECHNIQUES
YARN 3
Cut Yarn 2, join Yarn 3. Work in patt as est for 240 rows (120 garter stitch ridges). Pull waste yarn out of provisional cast on and put live loops on needle, making sure points of both needles face the same direction and work is not twisted (OR, pick up stitches in cast-on sts). Using 3-needle bind off, join ends of cowl. Cut Yarn 3. Crochet provisional cast-on: Using waste yarn and hook, make a crochet chain 8-10 stitches longer than the number of stitches you want to cast on; fasten off. Using needle, project yarn, and beginning a few chain stitches in from the slip knot, work through the horizontal back loop of each crochet chain and pick up 1 stitch in 1 chain stitch to desired number of stitches. To access live stitches, undo the fastening on the last crochet chain, and pull out chain, placing loops on needle.
YARN 4
Decide which side of cowl will be the right side of the work and place split ring marker on it. With right side facing, circular needle and Yarn 4, beginning half way between color changes, and working between slipped edge stitch and second stitch, pick up 1 st per garter ridge—-360 sts. Place marker and join for work. ing in the rnd. Rnd 1 (increase): [P5, pfb] 60 times-420 sts. Rnds 2-3: Purl. Rnds 4-6: Knit. Rnds 7-9: Purl. Rnds 10-15: Rep rnds 4-9. Rnd 16 (increase): \*[K9, kfb, k9] 11 times, kfb; rep from \* once-444 sts. Placing ring markers every 48 sts to help you stay in pattern in first round, work rnds 1-5 of Lace Pattern. Cut Yarn 4. Loop cast-on With needle and tail in LH, working yarn in RH, bring right index finger from back under working yarn toward you, then over working yarn and away forming a loop; insert left ndl into loop on right finger. 1 st CO. 3-needle bind-off: Holding needles with stitches to be joined parallel, knit a stitch from each together as you bind off. YARN 5
Continue in patt as est, completing rnds 6-12 of Lace Pattern once, then rnds 1-10 once. You will need approximately 25 yards for the bind off. I wanted to finish with a purl bind off Rather than purling and binding offat the same time, I chose to wrap & turn and bind off in knit with Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Of. Rnds 1, 3, 5, 7: \*K2tog, k2tog. [yo, k1] 3 times, yo, [ssk] 2 times, kl; repeat from \* around.
YARN 6
While picking up sts, weave waste yarn up and down, catching it in the running strand between sts.The yarn marks where stitches will later be picked up with Yarn 7. With wrong side of garter stitch strip facing, circular needle, Yarn 7, and beginning at same point as other side, and working between slipped edge stitch and second stitch, pick up 1 st per garter ridge—360 sts. Place marker and join for working in the rnd. Rnd 1: \*[P5, m1, p4, m1] 40 times; rep from \* around—440 sts. Rnds 2-16: [P10, k10] 22 times. Using Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off, bind off Rnds 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11: Knit. Rnds 10, 12: Purl. Rep rows 1-12 for patt.

YARN 7 & 8
There are two ways to work the yarn 7 & 8 rufles, in the round or flat back and forth. Chose whichever seems most natural to you, or which you have enough needles for-the large number of increase stitches was most easily worked on 3 6o' circulars.
Rufle in the Round
With circular needle and Yarn 7, pick up 362 sts in the back of the yarn 6 pick up sts, using the waste cotton line as a guide and removing it as you go. Place marker and join for working in the rnd. Rnds 1-2: Purl. Rnd 3: [K1, yo] 362 times—724 sts. Rnd 4: Knit. Rnd 5: [K1, yo] 724 times—1448 sts. Rnd 6: Knit. Rnd 7: [(K1, using loop cast-on, cast on 1 st) 7 times, k1] 181 times—2715 sts. Cut Yarn 7. Join Yarn 8; knit 2 rounds. Bind off (does not need to be a loose bind off).
Rufle Worked Flat
You will be picking up some even number of sts, working flat back and forth through thefollowing instructions and binding off, working insections until you have gone all the way around the cowl. The finished fabric will hide the gaps betweensections,or youcan seam them together. With straight needle and Yarn 7, pick up an even number of stitches in the back of the yarn 6 pick up stitches. Row 1 (WS): Knit. Row 2: Purl. Row 3 (increase): [P1, yo] to last st, p1. Row 4: Knit across. Row 5 (increase): [P1, yo] to last st, p1. Row 6: Knit across. Row 7 (increase): [(K1, using loop cast-on, cast on 1 st) 7 times, k1] across knowing you will probably end in the middle of a repeat. Not to worry. Cut Yarn 7. Join Yarn 8; knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Bind off (does not need to be a loose bind off).
FINISHING
Weave in ends. Steam lightly to block. Enjoy
