MATERIALS: KnitPicks CotLin ( $70\%$ Tanguis Cotton, $30\%$ Linen), 123 yards/50g -- MC and optional CC (shown here in combinations of Swan, Creme Brulee, Clementine, and Canary), and "Sprout", one skein each color This hat is sized by varying the gauge; work a swatch in garter stitch to estimate your rowgaugeonlyanddeterminetheneedle size you will need so that 60 garter-stitch ridges will equal the circumference of the child's face.

TRUMPET Using CC, CO 15 sts (this edge will be seamed; for a neater finish use a provisional CO for later grafting). Work in garter stitch (K all rows) for a total of 60 ridges, slipping the first st along one edge only. BO (or place on a length of scrap yarn if grafting). PETALS You will be picking up a total of 54 sts along the 60-st slipped edge of the trumpet piece for the first three petals: IE "skip one space, PU 18, skip 2 spaces, PU 18, skip 2 spaces, PU 18, one space left at the end". Petals 4 and 5 are worked behind petals 1-2 and 2-3, evenly spaced as before. With MC, pick up 18 sts along slipped edge: Row 1 (wS) and all wS rows: K Row 2 (RS): K Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12: kfb, k to last two sts, kfb, k1 -- total of 28 sts Row 14 and remaining RS rows: SSK, k to last 2 sts, k2tog End with k2tog when 2 sts remain. Pull tail through last st and weave in end.
STEM
With Sprout, pick up 40 sts behind petals 4 and 5 (running from the space between 1-2 to the space between 2-3).
WS: K
RS: K to the 4 center sts, SSK, K2tog, k to end When 8 sts remain, place the second 4 sts on a holder; work I-cord for 12"-18" with first 4 sts, then rejoin yarn and work matching length of I-cord with remaining sts.
FINISHING
Sew (or graft) trumpet CO edge to BO. Tack petals together and weave in remaining ends.
